Check out my other boxes:
Waterfalls One
Waterfalls Two

Wow what can I say? I had a business trip down to New Haven this past week. On a side trip up Whitney Avenue, I went by Lake Whitney in Hamden and this waterfall was flowing over the Dam. So I stopped and took a tour around the place. There is a neat Museum for kids here. When I got home I decided to finally plan a Letterboxing hike and series. So I checked for New Haven area boxes and found the “Above It All” letterbox series right there in East Rock Park above the falls. Later I went back to find those boxes and put in my first series down closer to the falls. So here it goes.

Clues:

From the Museum parking lot make your way through the Covered Bridge. The first thing you will see is a stone building with red windows. But don’t go there, take your first right path along the river. There are information boards about songbirds and watersheds. Soon you will be walking on a long berm. Keep going until you cross a short wooden bridge. Take your first left soon afterwards and turn NE. This is the running trail and you will see runner signs with numbers. Stop just before a split rail fence on both sides. Then head up a side trail to the right just before this fence.

See the roots on those Beech trees on your left, neat huh? Next you will find yourself at an intersection. Turn left and head up paralleling a street on the right. When you go through the guard rail to the street, head toward the stone wall on the left and go down another path to view the Whitney Falls. As you return up from the falls stop at the guard rail on the left and look in the end of the guard rail knee high behind a small rock to find the Whitney Falls letterbox.

Now head back to the main road and cross the busy street. Go up the stairs to the blue trail. Climb up the winding blue trail. Soon you will come to a T intersection with a 6 foot stump on the right. Remember this stump because it is your turn for the way back down. Turn right 10 paces to a Y intersection. Blue goes straight to the cliff and left is a short cut trail to blue. Take the short cut trail. At the top of the short cut trail when you’re back on the blue there is a tree with a small boulder behind it. The East Rock Park letterbox is behind this small boulder under a rock.

Now you can either go up for the views or return the way you came. Don’t forget that 6 foot stump, now on your left. Turn left and down to the road. Cross carefully. Then go through the guard rail where you came up. Then turn right again at the intersection passing those rooty beech trees again. But wait - there is one more letterbox, Covered Bridge, it’s between one of those rooty trees and an anvil shaped rock. Now take the short cut back to your car. I hope you enjoyed my little adventure and come back and see the falls again.

Send in (Contact Placer) your favorite series letterbox and I will add it to the list.
