Native American people were very in touch with nature, and spirit was important to them. They loved to express these ideas through symbols, either in their artwork or on themselves, and this series will show you some examples. They can be found at Pace Bend Park, a popular place for camping on cliffs overlooking Lake Travis with miles of trails. It inspired this series because when I used to camp here way back in the 70's it was called Paleface Park, and it has always given me an "Indian" vibe.

Directions:
From TX 71 go northeast on Pace Bend Rd (RM 2322) for about 5 miles to Pace Bend Park. Pay & get map, then go right on Grisham Trail about 0.1 mile then left into lot for Camp Chautauqua Trail.

Box 1: Arrow - Arrows symbolize protection (facing left) & defense (facing right), so you choose how to stamp it.
Walk to kiosk and onto trail for 0.25 mi as it bends right then up left to a wood power pole 30' left of trail. Go right & up to two small cedar trees among rocks. LB is behind them under rocks & needles.

Box 2: Crow - Crows are a symbol of wisdom because they are one of the smartest birds in existence.
Continue on trail 0.25 mi to two double-trunk & one 3-trunk oak trees in line on right. From 3-trunk tree, go right off trail 20 steps to large multi-trunk oak tree. LB is behind left-most trunk under sticks & leaves.

Box 3: Dragonfly - Dragonflies symbolize happiness, speed and purity.
Continue on trail 0.25 mi to marker #104 at jct with trail on left (Pack Trail on map). Continue straight 110 steps then left 15 steps off trail on faint path to multi-trunk cedar tree on left. LB is at back base under a rock & leaves.

Box 4: Gila Monster - Gila Monster represents survival since it can go months without food.
Continue on trail to T-jct with marker #102 and go right (Wookiee Way on map) 0.5 mi to power lines and sign saying hike & bike only. Continue 60 steps to medium oak tree on right side of trail, then left off trail 10 steps to multi-trunk cedar tree. LB is at back base under a rock & needles.

Box 5: Morning Star - This signifies renewal of tradition & is a sign of courage & purity of spirit.
Continue on trail to marker #802 and go 175 more steps to where trail U-turns left with dirt road visible on right. Go left inside the U 10 steps to middle oak tree beyond cactus. LB is at back base under a rock & leaves.

Box 6: Serpent - This is a malevolent creature of the Underworld who represents death.
Continue on trail a short way to the dirt road (Abby Road on map) and go left a short way to jct with wide grass trail on left by wood power pole on right. Go left on it 110 steps, then left 15 steps off trail to circle of medium oak trees. LB is behind middle tree under a rock & leaves.

Box 7: Turtle - Turtles symbolize good health & a long life since they can live up to 150 years.
Continue on trail a short way to T-jct with trail sign on left (Apache Pass on map). Go left on it 100 steps, then left 10 steps off trail to medium Y-oak tree. LB is at back base under a rock & leaves.

Box 8: Brothers - This symbolizes two people bound together & the line connecting their feet represents equality.
Continue on trail about 0.5 mi to just before jct with Camp Chautauqua Trail & marker #102 (about 35 steps ahead). Go right off trail 10 steps to two medium oaks forming a V. LB is between them under rocks & leaves. Continue on trail to jct and go right back to start.
