Distance: About 5 miles, 1,869 ft elevation change
Time: 5 – 7 hours depending on your fitness and experience level. I do NOT recommend this hike to newly minted hikers.
Terrain: VERY steep in parts. Trail can be VERY difficult to find at times. Hiking shoes, hiking poles are an absolute must as the terrain can be slippery and steep at the same time. Take plenty of water and a hat as shade is limited.
The hunt for this letterbox takes you up to the top of a lesser known peak within the confines of the park. The name of that peak you should be able to figure out from the title of the letterbox. I am pretty much going to leave it to you to find directions on how to get to the summit. However if you encounter problems finding information via the Internet, contact me.
Once you reach the summit, look in the rock pile there to find a glass jar. It holds a lot of paper and several writing utensils. Be sure to sign in your name and the date you made the top to record your moment of glory. But if you are a letterboxer you have more to do.
Stand next to the rock pile and sight a tree at 220 degrees. Go to it, passing a rock cairn and perhaps a trail that goes in that general direction for about 60 – 65 steps. Once at that tree, sight a bush at 100 degrees. Walk over to it; it should be about 12 steps. The bush is growing out of a rock face and at the right bottom corner where the bush meets the rock face is a niche. Your prize is within covered by a rock.
The hike is difficult but the sights are very much worth the effort. Just be careful and allow plenty of time. Please update me with the box’s status as well.
