Angels on the Bluff

(Alive and well, except for a damp box and a dry inkpad, as of 8/19/2004.)

Stroll among the stones and statuary at the Natchez City Cemetery (est. 1822), as renowned for its natural beauty as for the fascinating people buried there. Follow paths beside the lacy iron fences. Read the names aloud:

”Rufus Learned. There's a name to remember. And his magnificent mausoleum is a landmark among the rolling hills beside the Mississippi River bluff. His wealth and power became legendary, too, as did his ventures into lumbering, banking and gold mining.

"Jennie Merrill. Most everyone knows her sad story.

"Kate Schwartz. Hers is a sad one, too, as she died so very young in a boating accident. She and Charles West would have had a wonderful life as husband and wife."

"Percy Quin. Isn't that the name of a park not far from Natchez? I think he was in the Legislature or something.

Those are some of the characters chosen for portrayal by Natchez actors for the candlelight tours of City Cemetery in the annual presentation of “Angels on the Bluff.”

The event is always an early sell-out. Tickets are available at Natchez Visitor Reception Center, 640 Canal St. or by calling the center at (601) 446-6345. Visit www.natchezcemetery.com for info on dates of the next tour.

Even if you can’t attend the fall "Angels on the Bluff" event, you’ll enjoy this beautiful historic cemetery.

Natchez City Cemetery
2 Cemetery Road
Natchez, MS 39120

To find the letterbox:

Visit www.natchezcemetery.com for a map showing how to reach the cemetery. Driving from town on Cemetery Road, enter the cemetery at the Main Gate, which is the 3rd gate you will pass. If you see a signpost to your left just inside the gate that says, "Turning Angel Pass" and "Admiral's Way" - you are at the right gate.

Drive straight down this lane, past the cemetery office (on your left) to Catholic Hill. You might want to stop first at the office for a map of the cemetery.

Find the large cross monument honoring the deceased Bishops of Natchez.

Walk around this cross and through the well house towards the woods. Turn right onto the wide path. Walk past the Melton plot on your left to the O’Brien plot.

The box is behind the iron bench in the corner of the plot, with bricks and stones atop it.

Please be respectful and re-hide the box very carefully.

Happy hunting!
