Difficulty: Moderate
Distance to Letterbox: 8 miles RT
The Big Pine Creek North Fork Trail leads to one of Southern California's best lakes. The trail goes to Seven Lakes!!! This box is before the First Lake, at junction in trail for Black Lake. Be sure to go in Sept or Oct for fall colors, and cooler temps.
Directions:
From Big Pine (Hwy 395), go west on Crocker Ave (becomes Glacier Lodge Road) and go to end. Park on side of road, or go to lodge and pay fee to park.
To the Letterbox:
Walk to end of road and trail sign. Follow trail along creek and below cabins. Turn left on main trail and cross bridge. Climb to an old road. Go right on road. At junction you can take either trail (we took left trail going). Head to falls and above to eventually reach trail junction at 4 miles for Black Lake. Go left toward Lake 1-3, but look left off trail for huge tree downhill, with boulder in front. Go to left side of tree and flat rock. Box is between tree and rock, under a rock.
Hike length: 3-5 miles
