I adopted this in 2011 to preserve the warning below from the park rangers. Jockey's Ridge should be considered off limits to letterbox plants. The staff will pull boxes.

Jockey’s Ridge State Park features the largest sand dunes in the eastern US. The dunes consist of three peaks and are an example of a Medaño: shifting sand that lacks vegetation. No plants or animals make their home on the dunes due to the harsh conditions here. Further, no one knows how they were formed or where all millions of tons of sand came from. Quite curious indeed. The park is open to hiking, kite flying, hang gliding, and “sand boarding.” There is no admission fee to the park.

Upon entering the park from highway 264 on the Outer Banks, you will observe a small foot bridge on the left. The bridge crosses nothing more than a drainage ditch. The box can be found under the ramp of this bridge. There are a couple of slabs of scrap cement helping to hold the box in place in case the ditch floods. Be sure to enter the park and check out the dunes; it truly is a pretty surreal North Carolina experience.

***UPDATE***7/29/04---To Whom It May Concern:
I am a Park Ranger at Jockey's Ridge State Park in Dare County, NC. Employees of the park have found two letterboxes and a geocache during maintenance activities at the park. We do not allow activities of this type in the NC State Park system. We have retained the boxes in the park's main office. We will retain these until August 31, 2004 if you would like to come pick them up. After that date they will be disposed of. Please pass this information on to your colleagues as well. Sincerely, Park Ranger Jennifer Thoburn

***Note from Placer***---Anyone who wants to claim this box before the date noted above is welcome to do so. Plant it elsewhere or just use it for parts. --RSG
