NOTE: THIS BOX HAS BEEN RETIRED.

TERRAIN: Fairly level woodland path (might be able to do it in an off-road stroller if not too wet)
LENGTH: Just under a mile round trip.

DIRECTIONS: This box is located on the trails of the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve at Laudholm Farm. Go to www.wellsreserve.org for directions and more information about the site. Once there, you'll want to pick up a trail map at the kiosk near the parking lot or in the Visitor Center (there should be one posted in the kiosk if there are none in the box).

CLUES:
River otters are an elusive bunch.
Kin to the weasel,
Kith to ferret,
Curious yet cautious,
Determined yet playful,
This sleek and frolicking critter is nestled over a marsh.
From here he can slide to the water to fill his plate.
A walk along the nocturnal bird of prey to the field isn’t too hard,
Especially when you take the right way at the end of the wood.
From there walk a ways and hang your first liberal,
And into the pines ya go.
At the water’s edge, walk over the troll’s place without a toll
And rest your feet after this stroll.
Carefully, so not to scare him, look below.
The Lutra canadensis is napping after a lunch of fish.

NOTES: Sorry, no pets are allowed at this site. Be sure to check the website for hours that the gate and trails are open. You may also want to stop by the Visitor Center and exhibits. There is a small admission fee from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. You may also want to BRING A BIRD FIELD GUIDE WITH YOU to help in your quest for the correct trail (plus it's a nice spot to bird watch anyway). You may also want to check the mystery clues before heading out to get this box, keeping in mind that this is an ESTUARINE research reserve.
