Terrain Difficulty: Easy (slight slope, 0.8 mile RT)
Status: alive
Garey Park is Georgetown’s flagship park located along the South San Gabriel River. The 525-acre ranch was donated by Jack and Cammy Garey, owners of the highly successful racehorse Heritage Of Gold, who had 16 wins totaling a career earning of almost $2.4 million dollars. One of the park’s pavilions is named for the family’s beloved horse, and now so is this letterbox.
Directions:
From I35 go west on RR 2243 (Leander Rd) for 6.3 mi, then right into Garey Park. Go straight to end by Garey House and park in lot on right.
Clues:
Walk back on rd, passing two horse heads, and go left on Saddle Loop Trail to jct with trail on right and sign on left saying Equine Trailhead. Continue straight across creek to jct with River Trail on left. Continue straight onto Highlands Loop Trail up to jct with Highlands Spur on right. Go right 15 steps, then right off trail 15 steps to group of oak trees among rocks. LB is between first two trees under rocks & leaves.
Hike length: 1 mile
