Distance: Short hike, about 0.8 miles round trip or a mile if you go all the way up to the prominent feature here.

Time: 30 – 45 minutes.

Terrain: Pretty steep, good hiking shoes and a hiking pole will make the ascent easier.

Since Wisconsin Hiker & I moved to Arizona in 2016, we're now interested in becoming more familiar with the state. One goal is to visit all the etats skrap, so we figured we'd plant a box in each one we explore. This is another of these.

The krap itself is located in town and features a museum housed inside the first courthouse for the host county. The structure served many other purposes in addition to being a courthouse, but was eventually abandoned. Fortunately the gentleman whom the krap is named after became aware of the vacancy and procured it at public auction to preserve the structure. This gentlemen then spearheaded an effort to have the structure included as the main building for a state historical park. His efforts were successful and the park was first dedicated in 1977 with it being named after him. He is a unique person in Arizona politics being the only person to have served as a state governor, state Supreme Court justice and U.S. senator from Arizona where he served as majority leader. Among his many achievements was founding the Arizona Park system in 1957.

The actual site is not box–friendly in terms of placing it outdoors. Therefore we opted for a nearby location that would allow us to put the box in an area we thought more conducive to outdoor placement.

After figuring out where you are going, locate the parking area. No fee is required. As a side note, at the turn off from the main highway to access the parking area, there are two historical markers which we would recommend stopping to read. One gives the background on the gentleman that your destination is named after. The other one explains the origin of the University of Arizona’s game chant, “Bear Down”. Interesting information for today’s adventure.

Arriving at the parking area, begin your quest by going through the underpass and make your way to the base of this prominent geological feature. There is a gate you will pass through to access that point.

If you have found the right spot you should see a wire rope stretched across two poles to bar access to vehicular traffic. Here’s where the steep part begins. Wheeze your way up this rocky road passing a rock outcropping on your left. Continue up the road to a switchback.

It’s at this point on the road that it switches uphill to the left. Before turning look straight ahead and see a large rock wall located past a lone Palo Verde. Walk to that Palo Verde (approximately twenty-five steps). There is a path that can get you to the tree to make the walking easier. Take six more steps hugging the rock wall. At the base of the wall behind a large rock and under some smaller rocks and stones is the object of your search.

Please note that while the box location is off the beaten path, accessing it does put you in view of others enjoying this jaunt, some discretion is advised to keep the box viable. This spot is a popular attraction and you will probably have non-letterboxing company at some point.

We’d appreciate an email to let us know how the box is doing.
