(West Thompson, Connecticut)
Rating: Moderate, rocky terrain 1 1/2 mile

From interstate 395 take exit 95, take a right off the exit, it doesn't matter North or South. They both go off the same way. Follow the road to you come to an intersection in Putnam; go straight through and you will come to another light take a left. Go over a little bridge and you come to another light, and take a right onto Church St. Follow this road all the way to the end till you come to a stop sign. Take a right and drive over the West Thompson Dam. As soon as you get over the dam take a left onto Reardon Rd. Travel .4 of a mile, and turn into the main entrance. Pull in and travel .3 of a mile, into a big parking lot on the right. Park along the wood line.
Go down to the boat ramp at the northeast corner of the parking lot. You will see a pole indicating the beginning of a trail. DUE TO SEASONAL HIGH WATERS, THERE IS A COUPLE OF POINTS WHERE YOU HAVE TO WALK UP AND AROUND AND GET BACK ON THE TRAIL. NOT HARD AT ALL. The trail follows near the edge of the water all the way up. Follow the trail and soon you will pass a wooden bench. You can either sit and enjoy the view or continue on. Follow the yellow blazes for awhile and you will notice two huge rocks that sit in the water, continue on a little more. Soon you will come to a little cove, there will be tree with a yellow blaze in front of you, and two big boulders a little ways up the hill with a dead tree laying in front of it. (The boulders will be on your right). Make your way up to the back of the boulders and once you get around you will see the boulders split in half big enough for a person to walk through. (You should be standing at the northeast side of the boulders, near the crack). Standing there looking down through the opening, the rock on the right hides the Quiet Moments Box, covered with a rock.
Make your way back down the trail. Continue on to the second box. You will come to a stone wall, cross over and keep going down the path with the yellow blazes, twisting and turning. You will turn away from the lake and go through another stone wall. Make a sharp left. Soon you will come to a T, go left staying with the yellow blazes. Then you will come to another T, take a left on to an unmarked trail. Follow this trail a short distance to the edge of the lake. From here you can get a good view of the dam. (There should be a banking going down in front of you; what looks like beach sand.) DO NOT GO DOWN THE HILL. From the top of this banking take a reading of 90 degrees and you will see a big dead tree laying on the ground. Go to it and stand by the trunk. From here take a reading of 345 degrees, to a medium size tree growing from a pit. There will be your second prize,, the big one, at the base of the tree covered with stones. (It wasn't too far from here that I landed a 7 3/4pound, big-mouthed bass.
Back to car. Walk back down the unmarked trail, take your first right. Walk along a little more and take another right onto the yellow blazed trail. Follow all the way back to your car.
