Great hike past multiple lakes on way up to Kearsarge Pass.
Directions:
From Hwy 395 in Independence, turn west on the Market Street, signed for the Onion Valley. Market Street turns into the Onion Valley Road in 0.2 miles. Follow the Onion Valley Road for 12.8 miles to the trailhead parking area. The trial head is located at the west end of the smaller parking area.
To the Letterbox:
Hike the Kearsarge Pass trail, and pass Little Pothole lake and Gilbert Lake. As you are approaching Flower Lake, Heart Lake, Big Pothole Lake and up to Pass. After enjoying the views, turn around and start back down the long switchback. When you reach the first trees just off the trail edge on the left, see blackish rock on left with white veins in it. Go above this rock for 5 yards to cleft. Box is under that, under rocks.
