Difficulty: Moderate
Distance to Letterbox: 7.7 miles round trip
One of the best hikes in the Easter Sierra's. Multiple pretty lakes and not much elevation gain. Well worth doing ALL.
Directions:
From Hwy 395 at Tom’s Pace (aka Rock Creek Road). Turn south on Rock Creek Road and drive 10.5 miles up the canyon to the Mosquito Flats Parking area at the end of the road. The final 1.25 miles of the road is single lane with occasional pullouts. The trailhead is located at the south end of the parking lot.
To the Letterbox:
From Parking area, go to end and head south to trailhead. Hike the trail enjoying all the lakes along the way until you reach the sign on right for Gem lakes (to the right). Instead keep going on the trail up to Morgan pass (you can see it up to your left). Hike up the trail to the pass, where trail flattens out. Find a large boulder on the left side of trail. Go to far side, then off trail going around it to where it meets another boulder. Box is at base between these two boulders under 2 rocks (the top rock is a lighter color).
Return and enjoy Gem Lakes (find box) and head back.
Hike length: 5-8 miles
