From Interstate 95 exit 220, Titusville, follow SR 406 east for 8 miles to cross the Max Brewer Bridge and the causeway to Merritt Island. Stay right at the divide in the road to continue on CR 402. Around 3 miles, watch for the “Hammock Trails” sign after you pass the Visitor Center entrance eastbound. An ample parking lot is along the north side of CR 402.

Box 1: Park in the area of the Oak and Palm Hammock Trails. From the kiosk, the palm hammock goes to the left. The oak hammock goes to the right. For these boxes go to the right. Pass the Epiphytes sign on the left of the trail. Cross the boardwalk bridge and the railroad tracks and re-enter the trail on the other side of the tracks. Turn right at the brown bench. Go 30 steps then look left to the big tree about 15 steps off path. Box is behind this tree, covered with a rock and leaves. While you’re here, check out the upturned roots of the 2 huge trees going left and right. (No box in the upturned trees, just interesting.)

Box 2: Back to the trail in the direction you were going. Continue along passing another bench. Pass the common persimmon sign. Walk onto the boardwalk that winds through a woodsy swamp. Walk on the boardwalk all the way to the end. (The boardwalk itself turns several times, but don't get off the boardwalk at any of the exits along the way.) keep going straight. Pass the poison ivy sign, the golden silk spider sign and the dead tree sign. There are more signs, but I lost signal and couldn't record any more. Once you reach the end of this boardwalk, exit the boardwalk just after a big sign that explains the history of oranges in this area, which explains the orange trees you see during this hike. Go 30 steps after exiting the boardwalk. Look left and see a HUGE tree about 15 steps off path. Box is behind this tree, covered with a rock and leaves. To reach your car, continue down this path, there is a bridge and another boardwalk. Turn right on the boardwalk when you reach the T and you will be back to the original brown bench mentioned in earlier in the clues.

The Space Shuttle program operated from 1981 to 2011 by the U.S. NASA and launched from the nearby from the Kennedy Space Center. The first orbital test flights occurred in 1981. This year is the 40 anniversary of the first operational flight that occurred in 1982. Five Space Shuttle orbiter vehicles were built and flown on a total of 135 missions from 1981 to 2011.

On January 28, 1986, the nation was shocked when a major malfunction occurred just after the launch of Space Shuttle Columbia and all 7 onboard perished. To honor the astronauts lost in the Challenger accident, as well as those lost in the Apollo 1 fire and the Columbia accident, every year at the end of January, NASA holds a Day of Remembrance. All can reflect on the lives lost and changes made to improve the culture of safety and excellence.

Hike length: 1 mile
