Recommended ink colors: dark blue, red (optional), a bright color and brown.

Distance/Terrain: ~ 4 miles round trip, ~ 600 ft of gradual ascent/descent. Easy footing on an old abandoned roadway.

To get to the Trailhead: From the Phoenix area, take US-60 East toward the town of Superior. Drive through the town of Superior and just as you leave the town, take the signed exit for AZ-177 (Ray Road). Turn left here and drive 0.1 miles to the unsigned parking area on the right at the intersection of Magma Ave and Heiner Drive. The hike begins at the gate at the north end of the lot. This trail travel through the aptly named QUEEN Creek Canyon.

Queen Elizabeth II reigned for 70 years and 214 days, the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.

1952 – Princess Elizabeth (age 25) and her husband Philip were touring in Africa on February 6, 1952 when she received word of her father’s death. She was immediately proclaimed queen throughout her realms and the royal party quickly returned to the United Kingdom. Her coronation as Queen Elizabeth II took place in June 1953.

To find an image of the young queen, hike up the trail/roadway until you pass over a bridge and then under a bridge. Just as you exit from beneath the bridge, you should spot two small boulders on the right. They are near a mesquite and before you reach a utility pole. The queen is holding court behind and between the two rocks, under other smaller rocks. Please look both ways for other hikers before retrieving and replacing the box and be sure it is well hidden to protect the queen.

2022 – Queen Elizabeth II traveled extensively during her reign and, for the most part, was a very popular public figure. She died on September 8, 2022 in Scotland at the age of 96.

To find an image of the elderly, but spunky, monarch continue on your hike upward until you pass through a tunnel. When you come to a backward facing trail sign on your left, take 75 more steps and stop near a large boulder on your left. You’ll know that you are in the right spot if you see a cable embedded in the rock wall behind the boulder. The queen is resting behind and under the boulder covered by a smaller rock. Once again, please look both ways for other hikers before retrieving and replacing the box and be sure it is well hidden to protect the queen.

Corgis –Queen Elizabeth II was famous for her pet corgis and she owned more than 30 of them during her life. Her first was named Susan and her last two were Muick & Sandy. The last ones attended her funeral procession and are now living with Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

To find an image of her beloved dogs, return the way you came, back through the tunnel and under the bridge. As you approach the next bridge you’ll see a tall boulder on the left. 5 steps before you reach this boulder is a mottled pink and gray/black low rock. The corgi is behind this rock, under another rock. Again, please check for other hikers before you retrieve and replace the box. Be sure it is hidden well so it can’t be seen from the trail.

If you hunt for these boxes, we'd appreciate an email message to let us know how the queen and her dogs are doing. Thanks!
