CLUES REVISED August 18, 2012

Comment: This is a rocky, rooty trail and may be wet in some places.

Huckleberry Hill Recreation Area is in Avon on Huckleberry Hill Rd. which runs between Rt. 4 in Unionville and Canton. The recreation area is nearer to the Canton end of the road. Drive in behind what used to be Huckleberry Hill School (where 2 of our 3 children attended before it was closed) and park near the tennis court.

Walk the right side of the athletic field to the trees and pick up the yellow trail as you enter the woods. Pass orange to the right and cross a bridge. When yellow divides, go right. Look for a large tree with attached table-rock on the left. Bushwhack at 165 degrees for about 6 paces to an old birch. SPRING is nestled in its roots under a rock and leaves (there sure are a lot of them here). Please seal this box and bags securely since it is in a wet area.

Return to the trail and continue on yellow in the same direction, crossing two more bridges. When you come to a riverlet on the right (may be dry in some seasons)with fallen logs and a rotting stump, stop. (You should have just passed a rock and 2 fairly large trees.) Look beyond the stump to a large boulder. Behind this split boulder SUMMER is hiding in a cleft of the rock. Please try not to rip the outer bag when taking out or putting back.

Back on the trail, continue on, crossing the corduroy road* section, until you reach the intersection with blue. Take a left onto blue which will be a good uphill climb: up-level-up-level-up. Turn left onto yellow. Pass a rustic log bench and look for a hollow stump on the left. AUTUMN resides in the stump. If you pack the ink and stamp side by side they fit in the box better. Be sure the top seals all around.

Continue on yellow. Yellow will make a right angle turn to the left. Continue until you complete the yellow loop. But there is still one more season . . . so continue straight ahead on yellow and take a left onto orange. If there is a large puddle in the way, go back and head for the gate to the athletic field. Just before the gate, take a left and you will be on the orange trail again. Follow the stone wall until you come to an intersecting wall. Cross the intersecting wall and turn left to follow this wall just beyond the large tree with 2 saw marks around it. (It is the 3rd large tree along the wall.) WINTER is in the stone wall, 4-5 ft. beyond the tree. Look below the rock with moss on it. Under sticks. Again, be careful with the plastic and be sure to seal the box completely. Retrace your steps to where orange leads back to the athletic field and your car.

* a corduroy road is where logs are laid across the road to make a passable course over a muddy section. My grandfather often spoke of these in NH.
