Ewing and Muriel Kauffman were two compassionate, caring people who loved Kansas City and it’s citizens. Owners of the Kansas City Royals baseball team and founders of Marion Laboratories, the Kauffmans left a legacy of philanthropy and the Kauffman Foundation dedicated to “help others live self-sufficiently in healthy communities.” The garden is part of Kauffman Legacy Park. Across Rockhill Road are the Kauffman Foundation offices and the Missouri Conservation Dept’s Discovery Center, named for Lewis and Clark’s vessel, which also has a beautiful garden to stroll through.

This garden is a jewel in the city and has many visitors on the weekends and at lunch-time. Located in the heart of mid-town, from the Country Club Plaza, travel East on 47th street past the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art with it’s new addition under construction and towering Shuttlecocks, to Rockhill Rd. Turn right (South) and the garden is one block down on the right.

Enter the garden through the main gate and proceed to explore the garden’s delights. Around the path to the front of the conservatory is the Green garden with it’s octagonal fountain. The conservatory is a year-round fragrance oasis featuring six large palm trees with epiphytic companions. The Parterre garden features a long rectangular fountain pool with local bronze artist, Tom Corbin’s sculptures surrounded by perennial and annual plantings. Behind the conservatory is the Secret garden. The box you’re looking for is in the Parterre garden. Find some labeled “Itsaul White” Dianthus, then find the unlabeled patches. The one you want is the unlabeled one in the southwest corner. Lift back the corner of the patch and you will find your treasure. Please rehide it carefully so the plant appears undisturbed.
