On April 3,1860 a short but exciting chapter of American history was written in St. Joseph Missouri. On that date the first Pony Express rider left Pike's Peak Stables bound for Sacramento, CA. The intrepid riders only made this run for eighteen months but during that time they set a record of seven days for the trip.
To the trailhead: This box is hidden about 25 miles east of St. Joseph and 7 miles west of Cameron. From I-35 take exit 54 west ,or from I-29 exit 46 east, on Route 36. Go north on route 33 about 2 miles to RA, where you go west, following signs to Pony Express Lake. Just past the entrance to the park, is a small gravel parking area on the right. A nature trail begins here.

NOTE: missing 12/1/10 confiscated by land manager

To the letterbox: Tread boardwalks a pair to the top of a stair. Down you go then up again. At this point your count must start, thirty five steps but the trail does part. Do things right and you will see three tall senior citizens: a Y, an I, and one with serpentine feet. Behind Old Snakefoot lives the box.
