Bingham Copper Mine Letterbox
The Bingham Canyon Mine is the world's first open-pit copper mine (producing since 1906). It is reportedly the largest man-made excavation on Earth. The mine and the Great Wall of China are the only two man-made items that can be seen by astronauts in space.
Planted: April 19, 2003
Planted by: Cadenza
Nearest city: Copperton or West Jordan, UT
County: Salt Lake County
Difficulty: easy, but there is a charge of $4/car load to enter mine (proceeds donated to charity)
Instructions: After going to the visitors center and gaping at this massive hole in the ground, drive back down. I didn't hide the box by the pit itself as there were too many people (including security) wandering around. The letterbox is hidden 2.8 miles down from the visitors center. You will pass a runaway truck ramp on the right side of the road. Just after that is a deer crossing sign (also on the right). The letterbox is hidden under several larger rocks by that sign. Please be careful to cover it up well after signing it as it will be totally exposed if you don't. Also, LBNA disclaimers in watching for animals apply.
I hope you enjoy this. Let me know if you find it.
