To the Windsor Ruins:
From Church Street (Highway 61) in Port Gibson, turn west on Carroll Street. After about 4 city blocks (as you cross Market Street) the name will change to Rodney Road. Travel SW on Rodney Road 10 miles. There will be a sign on the left indicating the ruins. Turn left here and go a short way (perhaps .1 mile) down this dirt road. There is no entrance fee.
The Legacy of Windsor:
Windsor was a host to many cultural events marking the romance of the era. When visiting the ruins you can almost hear the rustle of dresses and petticoats as the ladies danced with the gentlemen seemingly stylish with their silk ascots. During the War Between the States, Windsor was used as an observation post by the Confederates, who sent signals from its cupola across the river to Louisiana. The house served as a Union hospital after the Battle of Port Gibson in May, 1863.
The Fall of the House called Windsor:
On February 17, 1890, fire broke out in the house after a house guest accidentally dropped a cigarette in debris left by carpenters making repairs to the third floor. All was destroyed except a few pieces of china and 23 of the columns, balustrades and iron stairs.

To the letterbox:
When you arrive at the ruins, you will be at what would have been the front of the house. To the right of the enclosed area you will see a sign with a drawing of what the house probably looked like and telling the story of the home and the family.
After reading this sign, walk down that side of the ruins to the back corner. While you’re walking, pay attention to the broken bricks and take a moment to think about all of the stories the bricks could tell if they could talk.
Now, turn around and walk back towards the front but this time count the posts of the rail fence. Go to the 6th post, counting the corner post.
With your back to the post, look about 15 ft. in front of you. There are 5 trees of the same type that form a rough circle. The box is on the ground inside the circle covered with sticks and leaves. It is a camouflaged container about 3”x6”x1”.
