Callahan State Park covers an area that spans the towns of Marlborough, Southborough and Framingham. To print a trail map, go to this website: http://www.state.ma.us/dem/parks/trails/callahan600.gif. Download the map and enlarge it before printing. **FYI: This area is popular with dog owners, who may have dogs off their leashes.

Enter the park from the South Entrance, on Millwood Street in Framingham. Maps may be available at the entrance. Upon entering the park you will immediately see an expanse of field before you, with paths that lead left, right and straight ahead. Proceed straight ahead. The path narrows slightly, through some trees, and crosses the brook twice. You will emerge into an open area; Eagle Pond will be on your right. Standing about in the center of the field, face the pond. Off to your left at 10 o’clock is a small stand of evergreen trees. A path leads up the hill that skirts these trees to the left. Do not take the path that hugs the pond.

As you crest the hill the path wanders right and leads into the woods. On your right you’ll see a wonderful old tree we’ve nicknamed “Medusa.” You’ll know why when you see it! Almost immediately there will be a 4-way convergence of paths. Keep to the right and listen for the brook. Cross the small bridge and the path will fork. Follow to the right, up a slight incline towards a low stone wall.

Continue through the break in the stone wall. The path will pass through a “gateway” of two trees and then you’ll be facing a triangular intersection. Take the path that forks left, then stay left almost immediately after that. This is Eagle Path on your map. To your right is a nice view of the pond; to your left the stone wall. Cross through another opening in the low stone wall and follow the path about 150’ until it meets up at a T intersection. Turn right and head down the hill, on “Fox Hunt.” As you take the “steps” down the hill you’ll encounter another fork- take “Sparrow” path on your left. Stop approximately 8’ away from the “Sparrow” sign.

Facing the Sparrow sign, a low, broken-down stone wall meanders off to your right. Creep along the wall, and be careful of the old barbed wire! About 6’ in you will discover your prize, carefully nestled in among the stones and leaves. Return the box and cover it carefully.

To exit the park, return to Fox Hunt path, and take a left to continue down the hill. Follow the path to your right and over the bridge. Your second right will lead you back out past the dog-walkers and to the parking lot.
