***Dedicated to the memory of Laura Christina. Parks, boats, and water were some of her favorites things. As well as the color pink!***

4/12/09 - reported missing or soggy. Will replace as soon as possible.

**These are all micro-boxes so be sure to take a pen for sure and ink pad just in case.**

Lake Wheeler park is southeast of downtown Raleigh. From the I40/440 beltline take the Lake Wheeler Road exit (297). Go south, away from, Raleigh for about six miles. After passing horse & cow pastures, the Yates Mill Pond, when the road curves hard right, downhill, and the speed limit slows to 35 mph watch for the brown sign on the right that tells you where to find the park entrance. Enter the park and follow the road to the first pull-off. You'll know you're in the right place because you'll see benches to sit on that face a pond.

After you park your car, cross the foot bridge. Follow the path across the damn, another foot bridge, and up some steep steps. At the top of the steps the path splits into three forks. Go straight & at about 24 good paces you'll see a fallen tree ahead on the left. Before that is a good sized pine tree with several rocks nearby. ***WATCH OUT FOR SMALL POISON IVY here ("leaves of 3, let them be")*** Under the largest rock is the trunk and branches of the Mapelok tree. When you have finished, retrace your steps to the forked path and turn left onto the rock-lined path.

Stay on the path until it takes a hard left in a 'clearing' and comes to a 'T'. Behind you are a couple of large, fallen cut trees. Take a seat on the log directly behind the small, sprouting maple tree. Reach behind the log under some leaves and large pieces of bark to find a leaf of the Mapelok tree (poke about first).

***Reported missing 7/5/06 *** Replaced 7/15/06******

Back on the path at the 'T', go right and over another foot bridge. After the red trash can but before the green one, go left. Now the path is lined with rocks and logs. You'll climb, then go left & down and up and down again, then ,if you look over your left shoulder, you'll see where you've been. The path curves right, left, right, left, then straight. See ahead of you where a tree splits the path? Keep going to the tree that blocks the path (the fallen tree has been cleared from the path by the park service). Stop, turn around and walk back 5 paces. Look to your left at a pair of pine trees in the woods. Behind the pine on the right is where you'll find the third leaf of the Mapelok tree.

***Missing as of 5/13/06 ***Replaced 5/29/06***

Back on the path, find the paved road that circles a parking area. See the covered picnic area down a hill toward the lake? Head that way and pick up the lake shore path down by the water's edge. Turn left down the path with the lake to your right. Ahead of you is a pine tree that blocks the path (again, the fallen tree has been cut and the path cleared). Look left for a pine with a funny looking trunk. Behind it is another pine. Buried between the two of them, under a rock, you'll find the last leaf of the Mapelok tree.

As always, watch out for curious on-lookers, seal the bags tightly, and hide the boxes well for the next adventurer. Watch out for bugs and things that like to hide out under logs and in damp places. Please rehide these boxes well; park staff removed the first box during routine inspection of the footbridges. And don't forget to log your find at letterboxing.org!
