Un4gettable Toy Series – Old Red

Every child has their favorite toy however some toys manage to span the generations and delight grandchildren as much as they did their grandparents. We hope to recapture the joy of these enduring toys in our Un4gettable Toy Series. The series will include 10 boxes. Each box will contain a code number as well as the stamp. Once you find all 10 boxes and collect the codes, send an email to us at bigguy9210@yahoo.com and we will mail you a bonus postal box with a special grand finale stamp to end the series. To keep in the spirit of childhood, as we place the boxes each clue will begin with something children enjoy playing or doing. We hope you have fun collecting these boxes and relive fond childhood memories as you find the toys along the way!
OLD RED
You can push or pull your way to Hope School in Vinton County to find this letterbox. From state route 278, turn onto Wheelabout Rd (across from the Lake Hope dam) for a short distance to a fork. At the fork, bear right and look for the Hope School on your left in about a tenth of a mile or so. This one room school served children of this community during the early 20th century. Peek inside the window and you will see some of the old school desks. Listen for the sounds of children playing in the yard at recess. From the bottom of the building steps, take a reading of 172 degrees and go 25 paces to a small, white man-made object. From there, take a bearing of 70 degrees and look at the base of a medium tree. You will find Old Red at the base of this tree under leaves and a piece of concrete. Please let us know if you find it!
