This is a short, easy walk along a road and trail that stay dry when most are soggy. Total walking to and from your car is about one mile. The Cooks Brook Trail lies in the northern part of the Massabesic Experimental Forest. There is a gated road on the south side of Rte. 5, east of the intersection with US 202 in Dayton. This area is popular with local dog walkers and ATV riders.
Park near the gate (without blocking it) or on the shoulder of Route 5 and walk down the gravel road (C C Road). Moments after your car disappears from sight behind you, you can see the small bridge over Cooks Brook. The sign board and trailhead are on the other side of the bridge, on your left.
Take a trail guide if there is one, and walk the trail along the brook. Pause a while and notice the sound of water and birds, and the smell of forest. At site # 15 the trail veers away from the water. Three blue blazes later the trail makes a right onto an older path. If you look left at this point you can see a faint trail heading off into the woods; you are at a “T” intersection. Facing up this faint trail (at about 110 degrees), find the birch tree that has a blue blaze on it. It is on your left and the blaze is for those hiking the Cooks Brook Trail in reverse. Start with your left hand on this tree and walk seventeen steps down the faint trail. Turn left and walk six steps to the remains of an old stump. Not much is left but a sharp spire of wood. The letter box is there under some old bark.
Enjoy!
