The Bassackwards Box II
Placed by the Basses

This box was originally intended to replace The Bassackwards Letterbox, which I was positive had disappeared. We were pleasantly surprised to see it was still there! Since I carved a different stamp for this new box, we decided to go ahead and place this one as sort of a continuation of Bassackwards the first. It makes a nice round trip hike if you start with the directions from the other box.
Sept. 2007 - Apparently they change the signs around there. You used to have to look for a sign that talked about geology and I believe it's different now. Find the second sign and you'll be fine!

From the Bassackwards Letterbox, continue on the yellow-blazed trail towards the Falls. Pass by the overhang on the left. Very cool spot! Continue on down to the falls.
After stopping to check out the falls, continue down the lower trail, marked with red blazes. Eventually, you'll pass a sign about the Second Growth Forest. Keep going! Once you come to the Catoctin Mountain Geology sign, stop and check out the fascinating large rocky outcrop. Standing directly in front of the sign, shoot a bearing of 30 degrees. Sight that tall oak tree just about exactly at 30 degrees? There's a large rock, slightly to the left, behind the tree. Hike on over to that rock. From the top of the rock, take a bearing of about 310 degrees. There is a large evergreen tree of some sort. From the side of the rock (once you've climbed down), the tree is about 6 paces away. The box you seek is hidden in the roots of the tree, behind a large dinner plate sized rock. Please be discreet, as you can be seen from the trail.
You can continue down the trail and will end up back at the parking lot after a fairly short walk.
