Harry S. Truman was born on May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri. To celebrate what would have been his 120th birthday, we have created the "Harry Truman" letterbox series. These four boxes celebrate various parts of President Truman's life.

This is the first box in the Harry Truman Series.

Harry Truman was born in a comfortable farmhouse in Lamar, Missouri. His parents John and Martha had purchased the house 1882 for $685. When Harry was born two years later in the downstairs SW bedroom, his father planted the Austrian pine that still stands by the house. Harry’s family moved away 11 months later, and eventually settled in Independence.

This box is located at the Lamar City Park, near the birthplace site.

Directions:

- To get to the Truman Birthplace Historical Site, travel on I-49 until you reach Missouri Highway 160.

- Go east on Hwy 160 through the city of Lamar two miles until you reach Truman Road. You should see a sign for the Birthplace.

- Turn north (left) and go two blocks until you reach the site. The house is open for tours Mon-Sat 10-4 and Sun 12-4, except New Year's, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Please take time to visit this quaint spot!

- From Truman's Birthplace, get back on Hwy 160 by going south, and then travel west (right) on Hwy 160.

- Turn south (left) on Gulf Street and go 7 blocks until you reach the Lamar City Park. Park on the south east side of the park near the play equipment and tennis courts.

- Follow the walking trail around the park on the east side. There is a small, wooden walking bridge across a ditch. The black, translucent pencil box is located on the south-west side of the bridge under the supports. Reach way in and be brave!

- Enjoy the park! It's a favorite of ours!
