SAD NOTE: The lodge pole beetles have completely destroyed the area. All trees have been removed. So too the letterbox.

Difficulty: Kid friendly.

An area of land in Frisco is referred to by the locals as The Peninsula. White River National Forest is on part of The Peninsula, but the letterbox is located outside of the gate on city property so as to "leave no trace". Due to an infestation of lodge pole beetles, the area underwent extensive tree-clearing, but the younger trees and the hike to Lake Dillon still make this a worthwhile visit.

From Main St. and Summit Blvd. in Frisco take Highway 9 south. After about a half mile, you'll pass the Frisco Nordic Center on your left. The next turnoff on your left is the one you take and it has a sign which says, "Peak One / Pine Cove Campgrounds, White River National Forest". It's about a mile from the Main St. and Summit Blvd. intersection. Soon after you turn in, you'll see a dirt road with a locked gate on your right. Park by the locked gate. Walk along this road to just before the second gate where you'll see a path on your right. Walk down this path and you'll pass some large flat rocks on your right. Go up a small hill. At the top of this hill, look about 35 yards for a parallel path and go to it. (There used to be a path to it, but the tree-clearing changed everything.) Turn left due east and go up a small hill. At the top of this hill, take about 30 steps at 45-50 degrees to a rose granite rock. Small granite rocks next to it hide The Peninsula Letterbox. Save some time to hike beyond the second gate. It's two miles to a beautiful view of Lake Dillon.
