Sept 2009. After placing 2 boxes at this park I finally decided to retire this letterbox. Just this past week while I was (visiting from Michigan) in North Carolina, the local folks that live in Lake Lure, North Carolina had a special ceremory to celebrate the life of Patrick Swayze and many folks remembered spending time with him during the filming of Dirty Dancing. I have left here below the section of the information that I originally provided to boxes who were interested in finding my Dirty Dancing letterbox.

The Story...........
It’s the summer of 1963 and Baby (played by Jennifer Grey) is stuck at the Catskills with her parents. Attempting to make the best of the situation, Baby attends the organized classes on merengue dancing and wig demonstration. Suddenly, all of that changes when she meets Johnny Castle (played by Patrick Swayze) the resort's rebellious dance instructor. With Johnny, Baby learns the steps to a new dance--a dirty dance--that allows her to discover new strengths and new talents in order to define her place in a rapidly changing world. Under the influence of Rhythm and Blues, Baby can now express herself and her love for Johnny.

The movie Dirty Dancing was filmed in 1987. Predicted to be a huge flop, Dirty Dancing far exceeded all expectations and is still loved by avid fans today.

The hills of North Carolina proved to be the perfect location for doin’ some Dirty Dancing. And the Fairfield Inn was at the center of it all! The Fairfield is now operating as the Lake Lure Inn.

The cabins that the staff lived in at “Kellerman’s” were at Lake Lure, North Carolina. They were demolished not long after the movie was released. Johnny’s cabin remained at least until the summer of 1988. The scene where Johnny attempts to teach Baby “the lift” in the water was just down the road from the Inn. The water was extremely cold with fall temperatures fast approaching. Many of the leaves on the trees had already turned into their beautiful fall colors, so the movie company hired some locals to get out the cans of green spray paint and go to work. The scene where Baby and Johnny dance on the log over a river was filmed somewhere in the Tryon area close to Lake Lure.

This letterbox has been placed in Chimney Rock Riverside Park on the road that joins the towns of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. They are just a mile from each other. Chimney Rock is where “Last of the Mohicans” was filmed. In fact, Daniel Day Lewis and Madeline Stowe stayed at Lake Lure Inn while filming the movie. Take your time to really check out the area, it’s beautiful! Great fishing, hiking, horseback riding and enjoying nature are just some of the activities that Lake Lure and Chimney Rock have to offer.

Now Let’s Dance!

Park your car at Chimney Rock Riverside Park and head down the entrance path walk which is to the right end of the parking area when facing the river. Head down the trail going East. You will come upon a large tree close to the trail on the left side. At the base of the tree on the right you will see several rocks, under them is the "Dirty Dancing Letterbox". There is Poison Ivy on the tree; be careful. Please replace all the rocks on the box after stamping in. Since this area is so well travelled, I hope it will help keep the box hidden. If you have reached the sewer grate at the end of the trail, you've gone too far.
