The Blue Eagle Box
Mary Washington Monument
Washington Avenue
Fredericksburg, Virginia
“Easy” (But wear something you can crawl around in!)

This box was placed near the Mary Washington Monument in Fredericksburg, Virginia to represent Mary and the college named for her. It is very near Kenmore Park, and in fact that is what it says on the box. I’m actually not sure if the hiding place counts as Kenmore Park proper, but it is a lovely little spot nonetheless, and you should visit the park just down the hill when you find the Blue Eagle Box! (Plus, there is another box hidden within the park, too!)

The Blue Eagle comes from the mascot and colors of Mary Washington College, soon to be the University of Mary Washington. As a student there, I wished to convey the spirit of our school, but still have it on more publicly-accessible land. Since the school mascot is the eagle, and the colors are blue and gray, I chose a blue eagle for my stamp. The ink in this box does live with it’s stamp (otherwise we might get red and green eagles too!), so please be respectful of it.

1. Please start your mini-quest by walking up the steps to the Mary Washington Monument, erected by her countrywomen. Pay your respects to Mary Ball Washington by walking counterclockwise around the monument until you get back to the front, and rememer what her son, George, once said of her: “Everything I am I owe to my mother.”

2. Walk 3 paces towards the street, and turn 45 degrees to your right.

3. Walk 20 paces in this new direction. You should be near a big tree at this point.

4. Turn 315 degrees to your right, and walk forward 10 paces.

5. The box is hidden near the wall, under cover of the large bush. If it is indeed where I left it, it’s quite a reach and you’ll need to get down on all fours, so be careful of the branches! But I tried it once and it’s do-able, I promise! :)

CONGRATS! You’ve found the Blue Eagle Box! Happy hunting on the rest of your journeys!

If there are ANY errors on my part in these directions, or if you find my box damaged (or not there at all!), please let me know so I can fix it right away! I can be reached at the following e-mail addresses: spete0ci@mwc.edu (until July 1, 2004), or at spete0ci@umw.edu (as of July 1, 2004).

Thank you so much for your letterboxing participation and feedback! Share the love! :)
