This box is found in the "most visited state park in Texas". Garner State Park was acquired in 1934-36 and was named for John Nance Garner (Cactus Jack) of Uvalde, who served as Vice-president of the United States from 1933-41. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) made the park’s original improvements. Check http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/park/garner/ for more information.
Garner State Park is 31 miles north of Uvalde. The park is located in Uvalde County, 31 miles north of the town of Uvalde, 9 miles south of Leakey, or 8 miles north of Concan on the Frio River. From US Highway 83, turn east on FM 1050 for .2 miles to Park Road 29 to the new entrance.
During the summer season the " Friends of Garner State Park" present a program called " Cowboy Sunset Serenade." This program gives an overview of the history of the American Cowboy through songs and cowboy poetry. "
To find the Cowboy Sunset Letterbox, park at the pavilion and locate the paved hiking trail that starts behind the pavilion across the sandstone paved dance floor. Follow this westerly trail to the road. Across the road is the head of the Bridges Family Trail. Watch for traffic here...it can be very busy and sight is limited for the drivers.
Head on up the trail until you find the boulder on your left that sports two painted spots, when if combined creates orange. 40 steps past the boulder, you will find a slender cedar tree on the trail's edge to your right. 8 steps west from that tree, you will see a rock at just the right height for taking a breather. 10 steps further west of that rock is a cedar tree which grows at 2 right angles from the ground. You will find the box under the 2nd right angle covered with rocks. Please replace and cover well.
