The Cactus Jack letterbox is located on the grounds of the Garner Memorial Museum in Uvalde, Texas.

To get to Uvalde, take US 90 west from San Antonio. From US 90, which becomes Main Street when you get into town, take a right on Park Street. The Garner Memorial Museum is located at 333 N. Park Street.

Most Texans know from childhood that the bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas. But how many know how that flower was selected? A resolution to adopt an official state flower for Texas was passed by the Texas Senate in 1900, but it wasn't until the spring of 1901 that the House began to seriously debate which flower it should be. Highly praised by John Nance Garner for the beauty of its blossoms was the prickly-pear cactus. Garner--later vice president of the United States--was so adamant that the prickly-pear should be the honored flower that he was dubbed "Cactus Jack."

If the museum is open, you will want to go in and peruse the other historical material and special displays associated with John Nance Garner and history of the local area.

To find the letterbox, walk to the back of the Garner Museum. Three doors exit from the back of the museum. Stand at the middle door and look toward the fence at the back of the yard. Directly in front of you is a tree. To your right of this tree is a hollow stump. The letterbox is under leaves in the hollow of that stump. Please replace the box and cover it well with leaves.
