|Placed Date||Jun 9 2004|
Level of difficulty: Easy (1.5 on a scale of 1-5)
Windmill State Recreation Area is located just off I-80 at the Gibbon, NE exit #285, between Grand Island and Kearney. Windmill SRA has a display of antique windmills that tower over exceptional camping facilities near small, picturesque lakes. It is a good place to watch butterflies, camp and fish, and there is a shooting range as well. For more information about this park look up website listed below. Park permit required. A one day permit is $4.00.
*Enter the park and follow the signs to the swimming beach area at the East end of the grounds. Park here.
*Go just N.E. of the parking area to the camper fresh water/dumping station.
*Look for a dirt road North of the water station that leads to the shooting range. Follow the mown path road to the North. Keep the shooting range on your right and a row of cedar trees on your left.
*When you reach the end of the row of cedars, the road turns East. From the end of the cedars, go 74 paces East. If you get to the next curve in the road, you've gone too far.
*From the left side of the path/road, walk 23 paces North between two large trees into a grassy wooded area, to a fallen tree. The letterbox is hidden inside the tree in a hollow area, and covered with bark.
My oldest daughter "Pup" and I hid this box together on a very nice late Spring day. Please e-mail me and let me know if you've found this letterbox. -Rosebud firstname.lastname@example.org
Update:7-31-2010 I went to check on this box but was unable to find it in the tall grass. It had been found last and put back by finders in April 2010. I am told it needs a new container and log book.
