There are currently 2 boxes (plus a bonus box) on this trail
Natural trail, well maintained. Fine for children that are walking or being carried. A bit rough for most strollers.

This trail covers many different terrains. From the prairie to the forest it is a great nature walk. The wildlife you could see is also varied. It is .6 miles long and fairly easy (only a few hills).

None of these boxes are more than a step or two off the trail, so please stay on the trails and respect the 'leave no trace' principle of letterboxing. Better yet, follow the scouts law and leave the place better than you found it by packing out any trash you might find along the way.

Also try for the "Bonus Box" placed by Franzsolo

I am a troop leader for a dog scout troop (no, it's not a typo) & one of the missions of Dog Scouts of America is to help educate the general dog owning public about their canine to accomplish (among other things) an increase in the bond between the species as well as prevent dogs from ending up in shelters. As a new means of spreading knowledge, the following clues need to be "solved" by knowing (or finding out) the correct answers to dog related questions. More about the non-profit group of Dog Scouts of America (& maybe some of the answers) can be found at www.dogscouts.org I hope you and your canine companion enjoy searching for these boxes & will learn a bit in the process. Non-dog owners are welcome too!

HAPPY DOG SERIES- box #1
Location: Cincinnati, Ohio (Westside)
County: Hamilton
Park: Miami White Water Forest
Difficulty: Sign said Level 4, but it's not as bad as some I've been on. Well kept trail with some hills.
There is a three dollar yearly or one dollar daily pass required for this park (but it then gets you into all the Hamilton County Parks).

If your canine is with you, please respect the leash laws & always clean up any dog waste. There is lots of wildlife on this trail, be sure your dog doesn't chase any critters.

Bonus: There are some flyers in the box that explain how to teach your dog how to greet people without jumping on them, to only chew on appropriate objects (not you or your stuff) & to walk on a lead without pulling (no force or pain is used to teach these things).

To the Park:
From I-75, take I-74 West (about 10 miles) to Exit #3 (Dry Fork Rd exit). At the stop sign, go right (about 1mile) to West road. Go right at the stop sign & then 2/10 of a mile to the park entrance. The park road goes both to the left & right, you want to go right. You will pass a ball field on your left & another on your right. After you pass the second ball field, look on your left for the sign marking the Tall Grass Prairie Trail. Park near the trailhead.

Clues:
Note: This box is at the edge of the trail, please re-hide it well.
Just after you enter the trail, you will come to a split. Get out the compass & take a reading of ___degrees. (answer the following question to get the proper degrees)

--Most dogs that are "tied out" are frustrated dogs. They experience "barrier frustration" all day long that tends to make them hyper and testy. This can make them dangerous to kids and other beings entering their space.
True = 90 degrees
False = 360 degrees

follow that trail. You will know you got the answer correct if you pass signs saying 'Tall Grass Prairie' & 'Miami White Water Prairie'. Continue on & at the first water bar (4x4) after the bridge, take a reading of ___ degrees. (answer the following question to get the proper degrees)

Which of the following are 'calming signals' that may help prevent you from being bitten:

a) approach the dog directly & look into it's eyes (= 350 degrees)
b) lean over the dog, pat the top of his head, smile (= 200 degrees)
c) avoid eye contact, turn your side to the dog, yawn (= 50 degrees)

Head in that direction. From the end of the water bar, you will want to take ___ steps.

Training your dog to accept confinement in a crate/cage will help:
a) protect your belongings from chewing/pottying puppies (= 24 steps)
b) relieve stress for the dog if he has to be crated at the vet (= 4 steps)
c) make driving safer if the dog is in a crate (= 7 steps)
d) all of the above (= 21 steps)

From the sapling, take a reading of ___ degrees

Positive Dog Training:
a) is a 24/7 activity, just like raising kids (= 100 degrees)
b) is a chore, no fun for dog or trainer (=280 degrees)
c) requires a gruff voice (= 180 degrees)

Then go ___ steps.

If your dog; pees when he greets new people, pees when he gets excited & pees when you scold him, your dog may have:
a) A spiteful attitude (= 20 steps)
b) a lack of confidence (= 10 steps)
c) A housebreaking problem (8 steps)

What you seek is at ground level to your right, in the end of the big tree right at the edge of the trail. This spot does not require you to leave the trail, but it is visible from two other trails, so be discrete. Also, if you have your canine companion with you, be aware that you will be very close to the horse trail, you don't want your dog spooking a 1000 lb horse! Please let me know what you think of this series & let me know if the box is almost out of flyers.

Thanks,

Don't forget to get Franzsolo's "Bonus Box" very near box #1 before you move on! After you replace box #1, get back on the main trail (by the water bar) & continue your trek away from the small bridge. After 5 water bars, you will see a bench.

NOTE: The websites containing the clues/answers for the following questions are also great for general surfing & contain TONS of great info about dogs!

Stand between the bench & the homes for wildlife. Answer the following question to get the compass reading you need to take:
(Clues/answers somewhere on the pages of: http://www.stbernardrescue.org)

Being the responsible owner of a dog means (among other things):
a) researching the breed you desire (or the breeds within a mix) BEFORE you get the dog or puppy =150 degrees
b) teaching your new dog or puppy manners and obedience and providing proper grooming and vet care for the life of the dog =270 degrees
c) Keeping your dog confined and under your control =80 degrees
d) all of the above =332 degrees

After you get the proper reading, take ______ steps in that direction.
(Clues/answers somewhere on the pages of http://www.canismajor.com/dog/)

AKC registration papers on a puppy mean that:
a) it is guaranteed to be a quality dog from excellent parents = 11 steps
b) means the dog should be used to produce puppies = 3 steps
c) the parents of the puppy might be registered with AKC = 8 steps

Now take a reading of _____
(Clues/Answers found on the pages of http://www.unleashyourself.biz/pdfs/lettingGo.pdf)

The following are reasons for letting go of the "Dominance Paradigm " (in other words, being dominant over your dog)
a) Dogs that are pushed around by their owners who are attempting to show them "who's boss" are more apt to redirect aggression to other humans and dogs = 250 degrees
b) Wolves respond well to the dominance of humans & our dogs are domesticated wolves = 264 degrees
c) The staff at wolf park use dominance, so dog owners should too = 350 degrees

Go in the above direction ______ steps
(Clues/answers on the pages of http://www.dog-play.com/)

When backpacking with your dog:
a) A well-conditioned dog can carry up to 1/3 of its weight in a balanced pack that is positioned over it's shoulders = 12 steps
b) Dog's should not be required to carry packs = 3 steps
c) be sure the weight of the pack sits in the middle of the dog's back = 5 steps

Look at the tree for a pie shaped rock. What you seek is a micro box under the rock. Please cover the rock with bark because the unusually shaped rock catches the attention of kids that play in the area. Be discrete & Re-hide well, making it look as natural as possible.

This is a bonus (no questions to answer :-)

After box #2 is securely back in it's hiding place, go back to the bench & continue down the main trail. You will pass by "Shallow Beginnings" & may be able to increase your 'lizard' count :-) Continue on to cross the long boardwalk. At the end of the board walk, count 2 water bars. From the second waterbar, go 25 steps. See a tree on your left that had 4 trunks? At the very edge of the trail in front of this tree is a triangular shaped rock. What you seek is under this rock. Since this is on the trail, be discrete & move away from the spot to stamp in, then re-hide well. Continue on the trail to get back to your car.
