BACKGROUND:

Monhegan is a small rocky island ten miles from the mainland and scarcely one square mile in area. It supports a year round population of 75 and its economy is based on lobstering and fishing. Monhegan is also a haven for artists, writers, and summer visitors. The island's lifeline is the Monhegan Boat Line in Port Clyde, Maine. The Laura B and Elizabeth Ann carry mail, cargo, and passengers back and forth to the island. There are no cars allowed on the island; only a few trucks to ferry supplies from the wharf to the village along gravel roads. Outside the village, there are 17 miles of hiking trails through woodlands and across rocky headlands that range from easy to strenuous. The sea cliffs on Monhegan, at 160 ft, are the highest on the eastern seaboard.

Monhegan thrives on a delicate balance of wild lands, village life, and visitors. Its fragile beauty depends on the respect and sensitivity of those who come here. Please obey all island rules. Fresh water is precious and fire is an ever-present danger. Be careful hiking on the cliffs and ledges by the ocean. The tidal currents and strong undertow make rescue impossible.

Points of interest include the Monhegan Lighthouse and Museum. Past the library, on the grounds of the schoolhouse, is the Tercentenary Tablet commemorating Captain John Smith’s voyage to Monhegan in 1614. Ice was harvested on Ice Pond for 100 years and the old equipment is on display in the museum. Monhegan's lobstering season runs from Jan-May; so you'll see the traps piled high on the island in the summer. Art galleries, shops, several inns and cafes are in the village. The wreck of the tugboat D.T. Sheridan lies on the shore in Lobster Cove where it ran aground in the 1940’s. Don't miss the fairy houses in the woods!

During the hour long voyage across Muscongus Bay you'll see a variety of seabirds, harbor seals, dolphins and if you're lucky a whale. You'll pass Marshall Point Light and many other islands closer to shore.

So that it doesn't take you 99.9 years to break the Enigma code, please go to Russell Schwager's Enigma Machine Applet at the following URL:

http://russells.freeshell.org/enigma/

ALL rotors are set to the same number. Solve the following quadratic equation for X:

X (squared) - 8X + 16 = 0

Leave the plugboard alone.

If you need more help, please e-mail me off-list. I don't want your trip to one of my favorite places to go unrewarded.
