The Couchville Lake Letterbox Series is located in Longhunter State Park, just fifteen minutes south of Mt. Juliet.

If you do not have a Tennessee State Park parking permit, your cost for parking will be $3. Park in Area 2, and make your way to the lake. There is a walking trail that circles Couchville Lake in a 2-mile loop. There are informational signs posted along the way, and many of the trees have markers, indicating their type. Encourage everyone in your group to stick to the trail, because there's poison ivy everywhere in these woods. Remember: Leaves of three, let them be! To follow the clues, make sure you're traveling clockwise around the lake! When stamping into boxes, be discrete, because the trail can become quite busy with joggers and walkers.

Box #1
Walk until you come to the informational sign for the Shagbark Hickory. If you stand with this sign at your back, there's a tree right in front of you. Its upper branches are entwined with those of the next large tree with a double trunk to its left. You'll know it is the right tree when you see that the smaller of the tree trunks winds its serpentine way upwards, entwined around the larger one. The first box in the Couchville Lake series is behind this tree, at its base.

Box #2 - MISSING, confirmed June 2005
As you near the halfway point of the lake trail, a shelter has been provided for a respite. Watch for the wooden shingles of this a-frame structure as you wind your way through the woods. When entering the shelter, head for the back corner of the bench on the right. The letterbox is hidden under a pile of rocks at its base. Rehide this one carefully, since it is in a high-traffic area. Make sure it cannot be seen from any angle.

Box #3
Walk on, this time keeping your eyes open for the informational sign dedicated to the Hackberry. From this sign, proceed along the trail for 30 paces more. On your left, just five paces off the trail, you should see the low crown of a hollow stump, smooth and barkless. Box #3 is located inside this stump, under the protective weight of a stone.

Box #4
Now you're nearly done, just a half mile to go. You'll pass an informational sign for the Redbud trees, and a quiet pond on your left. After this point, you'll notice a line of large stones, mounded up on the left-hand side of the trail. The trail follows this "ridge" of rocks for a ways, and then it ends. Just as these big rocks peter out, there's a bench on the side of the trail...so you know you're in the right place. The "last" big rock in the line is not far off the path. Walk up to it and around its side. The last letterbox in the Couchville Lake series is planted next to this massive stone, shielded from view by a smaller stone and some bark.

Miscellaneous Details:
*There are no stamp pads or pencils in these boxes, so make sure you bring your own.

*The path is broad and black-topped...stroller-friendly and handicapped accessible.
*There is a handicapped accessible playground.
*The Longhunter's Ship Letterbox is in this same park, so bring along the clues for this box as well!
