Before you go:
It is closed during the Winter.
Olallie Lake is at about 5,000 feet. Horseshoe Lake is further up the road (which is even less maintained as you go up) at 5,500 feet and is our favorite campground and lake. It is smaller and quieter, with very nice campsites. As of 6/27/04 there was still snow at Horseshoe Lake, but there were kids swimming in the warm water.

The Olallie Scenic Area is a beautiful lakes basin between Mt. Hood and Mt. Jefferson. Getting there is your challenge. From Portland, Bend or Salem, your goal is to find FSR 4690 and drive up to Olallie Lake Resort. The last 13 miles is your toughest challenge. The roads change from 2 way paved to 1 lane paved then to gravel. It is dusty but really worth it. There are great areas to camp all around and up at the Olallie lakes area. Check out www.olallielake.com for camping options at the resort. The prime activities here are fishing, boating (non-motorized), swimming (except in Olallie Lake), hiking, backpacking, and there is a very nice equestrian camp as well. And thought we are not fans of ATVs and dirt bikes, there is a non-maintained road above Horseshoe Lake that would be great for those who do which goes all the way to Breitenbush Lake. Anyway onto the reason for this information...

The easy part. Just before you enter the resort, the PCT crosses the road. There is a sign just up the trail above Lower Lake that tells you how far it is to hike to Upper Lake. Between this sign and the PCT sign there is a log almost perpendicular to the trail. Behind the big rock below the base of the log, look under the smaller rocks. There should be a small pharmacy bottle tucked underneath. Once you have logged in, please return the log and stamp to the baggies and carefully replace them in the container. Please be sure the lid is secure and tuck it back into the hole and cover it well. Heavy snow fall tends to shift things around and may expose it to the elements or curious creatures. Then take the trail, it is a beautiful journey or simply go up a little way and enjoy the view of Lower Lake and enjoy the whole area.

Be sure to stop at the Resort dock for a spectacular view of Mt. Jefferson.
