To take a break from a hard day of letterboxing you decided to have a picnic lunch in New Braunfels at Landa Park. You found a shady area near Comal Springs to spread out a blanket and enjoyed something to eat and drink. After sharing your lunch with the ducks and geese, you spend a few minutes listening to the sounds around you. Sounds of children laughing and playing are mingled with the splash, splash, splash of paddleboats. From time to time you hear the whistle and the chug of the miniature train. You close your eyes as the leaves rustle, birds chirp and behind it all the clear spring water bubbles softly out of the ground.

Excited chirping and chattering from the birds and squirrels wakes you from your unplanned but well-deserved nap. It's not long before you realize your picnic basket is gone.

"I saw the raccoon carry it into the wildlife viewing area," said the mockingbird.

"I saw the raccoon cross the bridge closest to the gazebo," said the squirrel.

"I saw him walk 10 paces to the right along the bank of the stream," said the fox.

"I saw the raccoon scampering uphill towards a tree with a large exposed root that was growing downhill," said the owl.

Round trip for this box about 100 yards from the parking area. Access to the bridge and the area past it are NOT stroller or wheelchair friendly.

New Braunfels is located on IH 35 north of San Antonio and south of San Marcos.
