Driving directions:

Take Exit 13 from I-91, into the town of Norwich. Go left at the Norwich Inn onto Beaver Meadow road about 4 miles. Park on the left side of the road and walk north to the end of the guard rail. Slightly hidden under tree branches is the sign for the Bill Ballard Trail.

Hiking distance: About 15 minutes each way. You can continue on this trail for a couple of hours if you choose. Follow the blue blazes.

Clues:
This is a well-maintained, gently rolling forested trail lined with expansive areas of ferns. It's a nature trail, so keep your eye out for numbers nailed to the trees. There must be a trail guide somewhere, but I don't have one. Number 13 is your lucky number today. update 6/1/2011

I HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED THAT THIS BOX IS STILL THERE BUT THAT SIGN #13 ISN'T (JUST A MARK ON THE TREE WHERE IT WAS. SO, START LOOKING WHERE YOU THINK SIGN #13 MIGHT BE. HAPPY SLEUTHING.

Continue for 20 steps past #13 and look to your right. Go between the multi-trunk trees to the fallen log. Fern-tastic's stone house is behind the log.

It's worth another 10 minute stroll to the Grand Canyon. Nature's show features a stream of silvery water cascading down dark slate-like formations in a magical arroyo. At the canyon's rim, go left down the hill and cross the stream at the bridge for a Valley Quest box.
