** June 3rd-
Hi all! This letterbox was pillaged by people who obviously don't understand the process. I am in the middle of creating a new poem for this- the trails have changed. Please give me a month or so to get this letterbox back in good shape. I promise not to disappoint! Happy hunting!

Trustom Pond NWR Otter Point Quest
This is an enchanting walk. Though it can take you as little or as long a time as you fancy, allow 45 minutes to be fair. You will regret rushing it.

Quest cluesheets are available at the Ranger Station.

Welcome! This is the Trustom Pond Quest
But please remember, you're the guest.
The animals and plants who live within
Are the ones whose home you're in.
So please walk softly, don't run or shout,
But look and listen for who's about.
And bring a pencil so you can write
The answers to the questions on the page's right
Now down the trail from the parking lot,
But not too far you'll find a spot
With a sign board full of details
About this refuge and its trails.
Continue on and you will come
To a grassland that is home for some.
There are nest boxes for bluebirds here,
Or maybe tree swallows will appear.
Look and maybe you will see
A sharp-shinned hawk in a tree.

The trail bears to the left and right
And soon the farm pond comes in sight.
Wood duck nest boxes stand on poles; # of boxes______
Do you see anyone looking out of the holes?
(Who do you suppose lives here?
In the water, the trees or very near?)

Left on the trail but just a bit.
Then down the bank and by the water sit
On the dock or on the benches and see # of benches______
What creatures above and below there might be.
Use all your senses, your ears, your eyes,
Wait quietly and you'll be surprised
By who flies or walks or slithers or swims
To see who's looking at her or him.
You might see minnows or maybe frogs
Redwing blackbirds, turtles on logs.

Back up to the trail, it tends left up a hill
And joins an old road, walking still
In a few minutes a pump we see.
A pump in a refuge, how can this be?
What is now a refuge was once a farm.
Nature's reclaimed it; that's the charm.

At the road's end a platform's there.
Climb up the steps into the air.
From the platform we can see
A salt pond as different as can be.
Salt ponds are special habitats
For birds and fish and creatures like that.
In the winter ducks abound,
While in the summer the osprey's found.

Down from the platform, left to trail's end
Stand and look around you then.
How many houses can be seen? # of houses_______
Is the water cloudy or clean?
It was fresh water in the farm pond.
But here it's salt and beyond
The beach in the distance we see
The ocean which is salty as can be.
All the plants and animals here
Need different conditions; is that clear?

Back up the road, on past the pump
Keep on going, don't get stumped.
Bear left off the road but go slow,
And by the trail map sign left you go.
A different habitat, you're in a swamp.
Here it's cool and dark and damp.
Look for ferns, look for frogs,
Birds in the trees, snakes under logs.

Go straight ahead as you come out in the sun.
Walk a few minutes and then for fun.
Look on your left for a windmill there.
How many legs hold it up in the air? # of legs_______
When this was a farm it was used to pump
Water for fields and animals plump.
At one time sheep were raised on this land.
Now they are gone and nature has planned
To replace the fields with bushes and trees.
And nature can do whatever it pleases.

Back to the trail and take the next right
The cut-down area on your left is a site.
Where Fish and Wildlife is working to restore
Native grasslands that were here before.
When you come to an 'I' where you can go left or right,
Go left and a bench should be in sight.
Now look over, look under, in front of; behind;
The Quest Box is waiting for you to find!

From the bench go straight, not left not right.
Walk through the grassland and soon the sight
Of the path to the parking lot will appear
Your Quest is over, the end is near.

The combination for the lock is: ______
The number of wood duck boxes ______
The number of benches by the farm pond ______
The number of houses seen by the salt pond_____
The number of legs on the windmill______

In the Quest Box you will find a stamp to mark your Quest you visited on this Quest.
