Mississippi Sound Letterbox Series

Mississippi Sound is a beautiful part of the Gulf Coast. Bounded on the north by the mainland and to the south by several barrier islands, it provides a scenic location for all sorts of activities.

Shepard State Park is located at 1034 Graveline Road in Gautier, MS. From Highway 90, take Ladnier Road south until it intersects with Graveline. Turn left onto Graveline and follow until you see the park entrance. There is a $2.00 entrance fee. Bring your Frisbee as there is a disc golf course in the park.

Box 1
Follow the gravel road until it ends (do not park at the disc golf area). You will see a sign that says, “Go forth into the open woods. Observe and listen to Nature’s teaching.” Walk through the trellis and down the trail. You’ll see water on either side and you might spy some turtles sunning themselves on a log. As you cross the wooden bridge, look for fiddler crabs on the mud banks. At the top of the steps, there’s a fork in the road. Choose the path at 250°. Continue down the trail until you come to another fork. While standing at the intersection, point your compass towards 220° and look for a lone hardwood growing amidst a circle of pine trees. The tree is about 30 steps from the trail. Behind the tree, under some pine straw you will find Mississippi Sound. If you’re not a local you might need to look at a map to figure out the stamp.

Box 2
Start in the disc golf area (drive or walk from the nature trail). There should be maps that show the layout of the golf course. Find the bridge that leads to the 11th hole. Cross the bridge over the marsh and when standing at the 11th basket, take the trail that goes 220° degrees (away from the 12th tee). Duck under a tree. Palmettos will be on the right. When you see a magnolia on the right, take 14 steps continuing down the trail. You’ll come to a fork and if you again look off to the right you will see an oak tree with 4 trunks. What’s brown or white or pink and found all over? You’ll find it behind the tree, under some bark.

Please rehide the boxes carefully. Although I once lived on the MS Gulf coast, I now only come for visits, so if the boxes are in need of some maintenance, I’d certainly appreciate it.
