When Big Ten Conference border state rivals, University of Iowa and University of Minnesota, battle on the gridiron, more than a W is at stake. These competitors are fueled by the desire to reclaim or maintain possession of Floyd of Rosedale.

In 1935, the Hawkeyes were 4-0-1 and the Golden Gophers were 5-0 as Iowa prepared to host Minnesota. Emotions were running high, fueled by past incidents, and a bet between Minnesota’s Governor Floyd Olson and Iowa’s Governor Clyde Herring captured the attention of fans. A prize hog from the opposing state would be delivered to the governor whose team triumphed in the contest.

Following Minnesota’s 13-6 victory over the Hawkeyes, Floyd of Rosedale, an award-winning hog donated by Iowa’s Rosedale Farms, went home with the Golden Gophers. Soon after, Iowa’s Governor Herring walked Floyd into Minnesota Governor Olson’s office. Floyd went on to become grand prize in a Minnesota essay contest and later passed away due to illness.

A bronze statute of Floyd remains a rallying point for players and fans of both university teams. To find Floyd’s letterbox, head northwest from the gridiron, past the arena, and past the athletic fields for baseball, track and field, and softball. Park between the softball field and train trestle, and begin your search at the exercise course.

Follow the paved path under the singing wires, letting the cattails lead the way. You’ll see native prairies and a pond. Will you see the reddish rock that’s on your right? If so, you’ll be pausing after 60 paces to ponder Floyd’s position.

Your sight distance won’t be limited, and you won’t find truffles, but you will find Floyd rooting under a log. If he looks over it, he’ll be able to see you at 0 degrees. Floyd’s home is not far from the deer path used by his furry friends. Following their lead will bring you closer to Floyd. Then, carefully step off of the deer path, doing your best to leave no trace of your final steps to reach him.

Please stamp in discreetly, perhaps near the wooden horse, then carefully return Floyd to his home. If you have time, enjoy the day by continuing on the main path or exploring some of the side paths before retracing your steps.

We are unable to maintain this letterbox frequently. If the letterbox is damaged, please contact us to arrange for its return. If you are a local letterboxer willing to help care for this box, please contact us.
