This letterbox was placed by The Cochran Family 16 years to the date after Geoff proposed to Jodi on a beautiful sunset-lit Sucia beach. Now, Geoff and Jodi share their love of the San Juan Islands and letterboxing with their two children, Brooklyn and Madison, and with you. Enjoy!

THE ISLAND:
With nearly 9 miles of shoreline, six bays, and extensive boat and camping accommodations, Sucia Island State Park provides one of the best public marine recreational facilities in the San Juans. Just 2 nautical miles north of Orcas Island, Sucia is inviting to boaters in vessels ranging from kayaks to luxury yachts. While there are over 50 mooring buoys scattered around the island, this letterbox is most easily reached with a moorage in Fossil Bay. Do not feel limited, however, in your moorage selection. A dirt service road loops through the wooded main section of the island, with branch trails stretching from it to all ends of the island fingers.

CLUES:
Once on Sucia Island, locate the painted island map overlooking Fossil Bay. There are two docks in Fossil Bay. From this viewpoint you should be able to see the western most dock. Review the map and become especially familiar with Fossil Bay and Fox Cove, as well as the trails around these locations.

Continue toward Fossil Bay along the service road. Pass the dock on your left. To your right, you will see the reminants of a rock quarry. Proceed to the grassy clearing bridging Fossil Bay and Fox Cove. Locate the United States Lighthouse Reserve Monument. Look west to Fox Cove and notice the mushroom rock that looks like it fell out of the pages of Alice in Wonderland.

Proceed south along the path toward EV Henry Finger. Turn southwest onto Fox Point Trail, up through campsites which overlook Fox Cove. The first part of the trail can be steep. Continue past the root stairs. Just past the trail crest, notice the first clearing and breathtaking viewpoint. You can see Orcas Island on your left, President Channel in front of you, and Waldron Island on your right. From the lone stump in this clearing retrace your path, going northeast 16 paces. The majestic Madrona on your left hides your prize in a break in its roots opposite the path on its north side.

Please email us when you have discovered our treasure. We would love to hear how you enjoyed your visit to Sucia and how our letterbox is doing.
