Cottage Lake Park Letterboxes – Difficulty: Easy – this a great first set of boxes. Dogs on leashes welcome in the park.
Location: Right off the Woodinville-Duvall Rd near Avondale Rd NE.

NOTE: AS OF THIS DATE (JUNE 17, 2005) THESE BOXES APPEAR TO BE MISSING - This will be updated as soon as I can get out there and check/fix/replace them!
From 405: head East on 523
Take the 195th Exit from 523
Head Right from the Off ramp
Drive up Woodinville-Duvall Rd till you see a VERY small sign that says “Cottage Lake” on your right – it’s brown (the way state park signs tend to be)
Turn into the 2nd driveway – this is VITAL – you CANNOT GET from one parking lot to the other in this park – they are completely unconnected. The driveway you want it right next to the BIG fruit stand. There is only a very small sign that says “More Parking”. Yes, it’s hard to find. Yes it’s brown. I think.
Now Park – and find the “Bike Rack” (it’s that silver thing that looks vaguely like a radiator right next to the Parking Lot). Please remember that a Pace, in these directions, is equal to 2 regular steps of a short woman.
Compass Based Directions
• Go 170 degrees 14 paces
• Go Due South, 17 paces
• Go 130 degrees 24 paces
• You should be amongst a group of trees in the shade on the far side of a path.
• In the crotch of a 3 trunk tree hides our little arboreal friend.
• Go 240 degrees 26 paces
• Go 260 degrees 50 paces
• Go 240 degrees 49 paces
• Stop – Look left – fine a young pine (the “more conservative” of the twins).
• Now find a sleeping relative of Rudolph at the base and to the rear of the tree.
• Continue 160 degrees
• Cross the long, wetlands bridge
• From the last plank on the bridge
o Go 300 degrees 3 paces
o Go 160 degrees 6 paces on the small, dirt trail
o Stop. Look to 100 degrees and find, snugged up to the fence, our nesting Blue Jay.
Now you’re on the other side of the park – you can see the swimming dock, the big field, the playground and the building that holds Cottage Lake Pool (and bathrooms to boot!)
Enjoy the park! You can get back to the side of the park you started on by either retracing your steps or heading up the path (right from the bridge) till you cross another bridge and you’re back!

“Landmark Directions” (for those who have no compass, prefer to work without a compass or can’t read one yet – the littlest letterboxers will prefer this set of clues).
Box #1
• 14 paces: From the Bike Rack, head forward to the ivy covered tree.
• 17 paces: Look through the space between the trees and see a Big Western Red Cedar – walk to it.
• 24 paces: Look left and walk to a small group of trees across the path in the shade.
• You should be amongst a group of trees in the shade on the far side of a path.
• In the crotch of a 3 trunk tree hides our little arboreal friend.
Box #2
• 26 paces: Go left and walk the path to the bench.
• 50 paces: Continue down the path to the BIG bush in the middle of the path.
• 49 paces: Walk up the Left fork.
• Stop – Look left – fine a young pine (The twin on the right).
• Now find a sleeping relative of Rudolph at the base and to the rear of the tree.

Continue on down the path and cross the wetlands bridge
• From the last plank on the bridge.
o Go forward 3 paces.
o Stop – turn left, go 6 paces on the small, dirt trail.
o Stop. Look to your left and find, snugged up to the fence, our nesting Blue Jay.
