About four years ago I had the pleasure of going on vacation to a very special and wonderful place. This July I was able to take pandora up there with me camping once again, and while we were there we planted this series together. I will not tell you the exact location of this series, you will need to figure it out for yourself, but the clues are here for you to follow. (I’m a pretty nice guy though and if you are really having a hard time figuring the starting point in this clue you can email me and beg and plead and I just might give you a hint.) I have named this series The Trail Where They Cried, which is also known as the Trail of Tears. In 1830 the Congress of the United States passed the "Indian Removal Act." About 4000 Cherokee died as a result of the removal. The route they traversed and the journey itself became known as "The Trail of Tears" or, as a direct translation from Cherokee, nu na hi du na tlo hi lu i "The Trail Where They Cried"

This series is not for the faint of heart, it is very treacherous at times. Box number one and number two are easy enough they are on relatively flat ground and are not to terribly hard to find. However past box number two the trail becomes almost impassable at times, and is not meant for small children or those that have difficultly climbing over logs, jumping down and over rocks, finding trials, getting yourself lost and negotiating your way within an old forest fire area. This trail will bring you, bug bites, scraps, bruises, blood, sweat, and tears. So you are forewarned.

Stay on the trail keeping the main lake of this area on the right-hand side of you this trail might be a little hard to find at first but once you have found a main trail that hugs the banks of the lake shore stay on it. The trail begins at the very end of the campground that is located on the east side of the main lake. Follow this trail until you see on your left hand side a seven foot tall eight inch round stump without any bark directly across from this stump on the other side of the trail is a two foot tall ten too twelve inch stump. From this point take 30 steeps including one over the roots of a tree and then approximately eight steps off the trail is where you will find the Wanderer where a stump and a rotting log meet.

Continue on ahead and you will enter a site that a foorest fire occurred; this is just a glimpse of what will be ahead of you, only it will be miles and miles of this sort of thing, look at all the death, the destruction, does it pain you to see such things as this? Continue along the trail with the lake consistently on your right though it will get further and further away from you. Go until you can see the lake ending on your right hand side. You willl then come to an area with four fallen trees and the roots are showing which are facing towards you creating four small fortresses as you continue on the trail you will take a dramatic turn to the right through two moss coated tress. Fifty-seven steps down the trail from this tree on your right you will find a very old stump on your left-hand side. At its base a pile of rocks conceaals the Last Track. If you look closely you just might see one of the last people to walk the trail where they cried. He has found a track, the track of the bear. Do you see it? It is a warning to those that should not continue on this trail to turn back, and return home. Because if you continue on it will mean nothing but tears – and pain for you as well; from here on out the trail is not for just anyone.

Doublle back and return to the tree where the trail turned. From the tree that stands in the center of the traill a small trail shoots off to the riight at 110 degrees that is the trail to follow. A small still lake on your left will appear. From this point you will have to negotiatee your way along the trail from here on out. The blue of the blue jay – the green of the great turtle– and red of the noble robin will be your guides remember this. You will need to navigate your way across a dry creek bed, many fallen sentinels, rocks, boulders, dust, soot, ash, and just about everything else you can imagine from this point forward. Then as you come down a hilll and can see a Long Lake in front of you waatch for a large stump on your left-hand side, with a tag markked 157. The vision of the mighty Huron is reesting inside. He has stood here for many many moons, and is guardian of this area if you look closely you might be able to see him back before this noble forest was a wasteland.

From here you will need to go down and over a dried creek bed and negotiate your way headiing left over the mass of fallen sentinels to find the trail that goes along the Long Lakes shoress, with the trail in front of you and the Long Lake on your right and the destroyed forest rippling around you on your left, you continue dowwn this path. Past the sign that says “T12” to an old campfire that is on your right hand side, right on the Long Lake shore. Turn right here and follow the edge of the lake over a very small stream. Ahhead of you in the treees, find the Hikers symbol and follow the main trrail left. When you have a choice to go down or up, be sure that you go up and switch back to the right. At this point you will need to rely on your navigating skills when wondering the foreest as the trail itself will break up and then show up again. Continue your way along the ridge staying to the left hand side of the ridge as much as possible. When you see the ground give way to solid rock begin to look for a sacred perch, and a ceremonial fire pit. With the Long Lake behind yyou and the Dark Lake in front of you, make sure the huge flat stone is under your feet. The pit will be in front of you and just a little bit to your left. Within the pit is a rounded tan sand looking stone that is not like the other stones that you see close by. As you stand on the scared stone close to the mystical Dark Lake at 210 degrees a burnt sentinel stands guarding the Eagle Dancers spirit. Behind her under a stone he waits for yoou to take a look at him.

Return to the sacred stone, and stand once again where youu were, then take the time to read the rest of this from that point you wont be sorry trust me. You have completed your journey you have walked what could be described as the trail of tears. In front of you is the mystical Dark Lake, around you is the fallen but not forgotten forest and to your right is the Bear in the Mountain. Not many people know of the Bear in the Mountain only a select few have ever been able to see him in his true and wondrous nobility. The story goes that once there were two brothers who did everything together, they laughed, they played, they cried and the fought together. One day however when the berriess were ripe on the vine, tthe oldest brother of the two began to eat and eat not leaving any for anyone else. As the days followed he began to aact very strangely. He would walk on all fours, and growl for hours on end. He then began to become very hairy and his hands started to turn into what looked like claws. The younger brrother one day decided to go talk to his brother because he was very worried about him so he approached his beloved brother and began trying to talk to him. All that his brother would say in a growling type voice was “protect and treasure our land and people”. Suddenly the older brother ran off, and the younger brother followed him through the never ending forest. The older brother ran up the mountain and out of exhaustion fell asleep near its summit. But the young brother lost him in the forest and has wondered the land forever more in search of his brother. Some people say that the older brother turned into a bear and is the protector of this great and noble land. He can still be seen in the mountain to this very day. The younger brother is said to wonder the forest in search of his lost brother, perhaps at one time he was standing on the very stone that you are standing on right now. In factt if you look to your left and happen to notice a standing tree that is touching the sacred stone, you just might get a glimpse of him and the Bear in the Mountain under the stone at the base of the other side of the her.

Happy Hunting!
