UPDATE JULY 2007: UNFORTUNATELY THE UPRISING BOX DID NOT MAKE IT THROUGH THE WINTER. AT THE 2007 OCEAN STATE REGGAE FESTIVAL WE HAD TO PULL THE BOX PERMANENTLY. THE BOX IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING REPAIRS AND WE WILL EVENTUALLY BE RE-PLACED IN A BRAND NEW LOCATION.

Update January 2007: we had to pull the box temporarily for repairs in 2005, it was replaced at the 0cean state reggae festival in July 2006. The logbook was rebuilt and we even had all the members of 'the one band' autograph it at the festival!!

The "Uprising" letterbox is dedicated to Bob Marley and his gift of reggae music, and spreading his philosophy of "one love, one heart", one world. Bob Marley was born 6 February 1945 in a small village called Nine Miles in the parish of St. Ann, Jamaica. Bob's musical career spanned two decades until he was lost to the living on May 11, 1981. He remains to this day a "Natural Mystic"; a hero, a rebel and a legend to many around the world.

In many ways, the 1980 tour and the Uprising album it promoted were designed to force reggae and Rasta into the commercial marketplace... His message, however, was far deeper than that of a musical ambassador. "We are in a struggle to be free, to eat," Marley said in the interview after the concert. "This music is about struggle. Reggae is a vehicle to carry a message of freedom and peace."

A universal tune, 'Redemption Song' is like a final statement in a career, a summation of all the themes and thought that had created it. "You've got to live out the book."... "There was a feeling of a whole era coming to a climax. Everyone felt that he knew something was going to happen," says Rita Marley.

"Won't you help to sing, these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had, redemption songs" Bob Marley

Two sisters in Connecticut grew up cherishing Bob Marley's music and his messages. Throughout the years the two sisters were inspired by their beloved (and rankin!) Gram who could out reggae anyone well into her 90s! The sisters fondly remember many a cool full-moon Jamaican nights spent down at Strawberry Fields, dancing with our Gram, listening to Bob's music, and playing dominoes. So every year these two sisters pack up their dominoes and take an irie camping trip to a reggae festival where they listen to some crucial reggae bands, eat some righteous curried chicken, cool off with Ting, and, in the year 2004, plant the Uprising letterbox!

Please plan to take some time with our irie Uprising letterbox, it's worth it! The stamp is gigantic, 8 1/2" x 11", and was carved nearly 25 years ago by Rush Gatherer in 1980, shortly after seeing Bob live in concert in Boston, and just before he passed away in 1981. Bring a separate large sheet of paper for the stamp image (unless your log book is 8 1/2" x 11" or larger!). Here's the best way to stamp an impression with this stamp: First lay the stamp down face up. Dab the ink pads onto the appropriate stamp areas, it may take a bit of dabbing Then, take your paper and carefully lay it down over the face-up inked stamp, taking care not to move the paper once it's down. Then "burnish" or briskly rub the entire surface of the back of the paper. Holding the paper in place with one hand, burnish around with the other hand using either the rounded back of the stamp pad cover, or anything smooth that wont rip the paper. Please put everything away carefully in plastic bags, we're not sure how waterproof the container will be.

The Uprising box was originally placed at the three day 2004 New England Reggae Festival. The festival is held at Ninigret Park in Charlestown RI. Read more about the festival at http://oceanstatereggae.com . In July 2007, the Uprising letterbox was pulled from this location for repairs and eventually will be replanted.
