Pool Wildlife Sanctuary Letterbox Series – Emmaus, PA

Directions to the Pool Wildlife Sanctuary:

If this link goes away, please let me know!

Pool Wildlife Sanctuary – Newly Replaced microbox as of 3/15/2008.

From the Main Parking lot off of Orchard Place, go up to the main map board. Take a gander, as they maps the sometimes provide may not be available. Follow the red brick road toward the red barn (heading east). go past the white house and up to the Pavillion. From the Nexus (small sign post) go due south to beginnings of the Floodplain trail. A Riparian sign starts your sojourn along a boardwalk, being sure to follow a bearing of 135° at the first resting area. You’ll continue on to a “Natural Pond”. What are some of the predators here?

Go past the stadium at Shaf’s Pond. The boardwalk will end and you’ll feel compelled to run with the pheasants, heading North. At a T, go 255°. I think it is time to identify some trees (a nearby sign board created by an Eagle Scout may be helpful). Go to the southern and and spot a bench near the west forest edge. A White Oak (9) will be 6 paces east from it and a Sweet Birch will be directly south. From the north edge of the bench, go 265° for 6 paces to a decidous tree among a grove of conifers. SPOL.

Woodland Trail – A Normal Sized Letterbox - Still kicking after 3.75 years!

From the Eagle Scout sign board, head in a generally northerly direction to resume running with the Pheasants. Head west to continue your quest. At the gravel road crossing, bear 285°., where the path will go slightly uphill. Pass a couple of clearings and eventually the Woodland Loop will post its presence at 25°. Follow this, but sooner or later you will want somebody to “Give Me A Clue”! At this point, head 75°. Winding and winding, watching out for spiderwebs! At the board splitting 60 evenly, you shall be very close to the prize. Your bearing is __ for Me times __ for you divided by 20. Hop over the bench and proceed 5 paces further to a tree. At (not in) the roots, a SPOR protects the goal of your quest.

Wildlands Conservancy - a Micobox again

To return to the lot, retrace your steps from the place that clues you in. From there, head 210 deg to rejoin the path that brought you uphill. Turn right at 300° and continue uphill, passing a bench, a private property sign and a cement cistern on your right. You are now on the Urban Forest connector trail. Take a guide rail protected baby switchback slightly downhill and cross to little bridgelettes. You will soon come to a tremendous Tuliptree right on the left hand side of the trail. From it, go SW 3 paces to a smaller relative. Find the mousehole with a SPOR on the SW side. If you come to a patch of pachysandra on the right, you have gone to far.

Enjoy,

Lightnin' Bug and Masked Sculptor
