In 1884, Henry Pittock's Lacamas Colony Company purchased 3,000 acres of land from the banks of the Columbia, the banks of the Washougal and Lacamas and the shores of Lake Camas. Pittock, publisher of the Oregonian, was looking for a new supply of newsprint and began to build a paper mill 1/4 mile upstream from the mouth of Lacamas Creek. It was to be the biggest, most modern mill west of the Rockies, built to produce 3 tons of newprint a day.
30 Chineese imigrants constructed a 7,000 foot aquaduct from Round Lake to the mill site. "Mill ditch" remains in use 110 years later, much of it in the form of a tunnel which passes beneath Camas school athletic fields and emerges on the hill overlooking downtown Camas.
Today Georgia Pacific remains one of Clark counties largest employers and produces communication papers, towel and tissue products.

To the park: Lacamas Heritage Trail at Goodwin Road and Lacamas Creek
From Camas, follow Hwy 500 through town, out past the air port,
past Fern Praire Market. At 242 Ave, 500 goes north, instead, go
straight which is 28th St. 28th turns into Goodwin Rd and the
trail head is not far past the golf course on the left.

TO THE BOX
Between the links, through the trees, the tension overhead sounds
like bees.
Past the half and on to the whole, now you are entering the land
of trolls.
Past the one and bench number two, another quarter and you are
almost through.
At five quarters in, past the post, you'll find the tree we
liked the most.
Inside the bowels of this double trunked tree, look under a
rock and there it will be.
