E.M.S. Stands For Emergency Medical Services
EMS Boxes Numbers 1 and 2,
In honor of national EMS week May 18-24, 2003.
Difficulty: Moderate to Hard (Depends on your skill and the weather). This should not be done when the ground is wet, due to some slippery areas. This may not be the best for very young children, and as with all blue blase trails dogs should be leashed.
Length: A very pretty two miles. About 1.5 hour round trip
In Preston find where Old Jewett City Rd. connects with Rt. 165, it's just over the Preston/Norwich border. Park on Old Jewett City rd. There's a turn around with room for about two to three cars. Park here, and cross Rt. 165. (Please be very careful this is a very busy road. I wish there was closer parking) There is a drive way, walk a very short way down the driveway. On the right you will see the trail head of the Pequot Trail. You will be following this, which is indicated by the Blue Blazes. So, when all else fails follow the Blue Blazes. The start of the trail tends to get a bit over grown but it is followable. Follow the Blue Blazes to the power lines. Take a left under the power lines. You will soon cross a stone wall, and then some mild soggy spots (Depending on the weather). You will cross a small stream and then come upon a Grand Olde Tree. Find the tree's lowest branch. This branch will point the way to your first box, from the path it's about 75 degrees. Facing away from the tree and in the direction which the branch is pointing, starting on the path with the branch over head take about 14 steps (depending on height of the person walking, count every foot fall.) Go to the rock that's about 4 foot across at the widest. Under a small pile of rocks, under the large rock you walked up to is your first prize. The E.M.S. Box #1. After stamping in return to the path and keep going in your original direction.
You will cross a stone wall and come to an intersection. At this intersection go left with the power lines. Continue to next intersection and go straight with the power lines. Keep on with the Blue Blazes. Go to next intersection and strait again with the power lines. Stay with Blue Blazes and you will pass a pond on your right. This is such a lovely area. You will come to a Large Brook which you need to cross, be very carefull. The sides that lead up to the brook are very steep. Continue on with the Blue Blazes, you will pass an old camp site on the right. A four way intersection will be right ahead of you. Continue strait through it. Blue Blazes follows an old wood road. Follow the Blue Blazes. The Blazes will start to lengthen between each one, don't worry about it. You will pass an old car on your right, continue to the stone wall and cross it. Follow the Blue Blazes to a "T" intersection and follow them Left.
You will come to a fence on either side of the trail. (This fence may be hidden under leaves) The fence is an old metal-wire fence, go past the fence and stay on the trail. Per the Blue Blaze Trail book, I sorry to say that from the fence on, is Hikers only. Hikers are welcome but No Mt. bikes, sorry. Dogs are still welcome, on leash though. From the fence take about 35 paces (count every left foot fall) and the Blue Blazes turns right up a small ledge. Follow Blue Blazes up the small ledge, AT THE TOP. At 100 degrees and about seven steps, by the tree, at the bottem of the smallest pile of rocks (with a white marker stone), is the E.M.S. Box #2. Now return the way you came and enjoy the scenery.
