BOX UPDATE: Alive and Well as of 8/2006!

*note* This is a swim area, with picnic tables, grills, numerous play structures, horseshoe pits, and many restrooms. It's a wonderful place for the family to visit and spend the day.

This is LILY's FIRST letterbox AND FIRST attempt at carving a stamp. It's an x-acto knife work of art but I use the term "art" quite loosely!!!

Placed at Blue Lake Park on Coast Guard Day August 4, 2004.

August 4 is celebrated as Coast Guard Day to honor the establishment on that day in 1790 of the Revenue Cutter Service, forebear of today's United States Coast Guard, by the Treasury Department.

The Coast Guard has been continuously at sea since its inception, although the name Coast Guard didn't come about until 1915.

Coast Guard Day is primarily an internal activity for active duty Coast Guard personnel, civilian members, reservists, retirees, auxiliarists, and dependents. Typically it is the largest community celebration of a branch of the Armed Forces in the nation.

CLUES:

Coming into Blue Lake Park head towards the water and the Shahala Picnic Shelter. Park your car in the parking lot. Walk towards the lake. When you reach the cement/rock trash can on your right near the beach house bathrooms, STOP.

You want the path that veers to the left and heads towards the water (not the path that heads towards other picnic shelters. Begin counting to 50 paces. When you reach 50, STOP. Look right and see where people have fun in the sun. Look left and remember your days as a child.

Now continue forward 47 more paces. On the 47th pace STOP! You should be standing on top of a place where two kinds of pavement meet. Did you notice the difference? One is far more detailed than the other. Continue forward 70 paces.

At 70 paces, STOP! There is a lone tree, skinnier than the rest surrounding it. Face that tree. Now, turn around and face the lake. Look for the flag straight ahead on a tall, white mast. When you've found it, take a moment to remember those men and women who are willing to serve and to die for their country so that we (Americans) can live FREE.

After honoring your country, turn back and face the tree. Step forward and stand side by side with the tree on your right. Move forward 28 paces. (This may require going around two picnic tables..it's not a bee-line 28 paces.) When you've reached 28 paces, STOP!

To your left is a tree with 5 skinny legs. Step over a few steps and face the lake again with the middle trunk in front of you.

Where is the flag?
Which side is it on?

On that side, 2 paces in front of you is the Blue Lake Park Letterbox.

BE VERY VERY VERY VERY DISCREET when finding this box. There are picnic tables all around it and many people coming and going. Please use your best finding and replacing skills to ensure this box remains for a long time in it's special place.

ENJOY!

P.S. One can never know when a little something special may end up in the box for the next finder....hint....check back the first week of August 2005.
