Rocky Neck State Park

Directions to Rocky Neck: Interstate 95, Exit 72, Follow signs to Rocky Neck State Park.

Entrance Fee: April to September, Weekends - $9.00, Weekdays - $7.00, Free after 6:30PM

Difficulty: EASY. One mile walk on flat ground. Wear Flip-Flops or sandals as the boardwalk can give you splinters.

Clues:

Letterbox #1: Castle Rock:
Park in the lot by the concession stand/bath house. Walk under the underpass towards the beach. Turn right and follow the stone path toward the pavillion. Go past "The Wall". Turn right through the arch under the pavillion. Turn right up the stairs to the top. Turn left on to the white cement bridge which passes over the train tracks. Cross the bridge. You will come to fork at the end of the bridge made of asphalt. Bear to the right, it is a very short span of tar. Stop at the end of this asphalt and look slightly to your left. You will see three rock outcroppings, one on top of the other. At the base of these outcroppings you will find the first letterbox in a pile of small rocks. Make sure it is well hidden when you are done. (We had to change the location of this box (August 05) because it was taken twice. We think it was in too public of an area. Please be discreet when looking for this box.)

Letterbox #2: Under the Boardwalk:
Return to the entrance of the beach. The boardwalk starts here. Follow the boardwalk for a stroll along the shore. Once you get to the area of the boardwalk where there are trees on both sides, look for a wooden ramp leading to the beach. Continue on the boardwalk looking for the next sandy path leading to the beach. A large tree with heart-shaped leaves marks the path. Directly across the boardwalk from this path you will find the second letterbox planted under the boardwalk.

Letterbox #3: By Bride Brook:
Notice: We had to change the location of this third box because someone stole it from the original location. We guess it was in busy area where children like to climb and play. We hope this one lasts a little longer. So if you did this box before the middle of August 04, you may want to go back and do this one again.
Continue your walk along the boardwalk until you come to Bride Brook. Follow the boardwalk through the tunnel under the train tracks to the end. (Note: We think being under the train tracks when the train goes by is good luck.) You will see a billboard with a map of Rocky Neck State Park. Go past the map and take a right onto either the first or second dirt path. Follow either path to the bridge over Bride Brook. At the foot of the bridge notice the family of tangled maple trees to your left by the water. Check the base of this tree for your third shell. Watch out for thorns on nearby bushes!

Planted by Little LULU and Ladybug. Our first planted letterboxes.
If you find the letterboxes and want to correspond with us, email us at JLAM2761@aol.com.

Planted in memory of John Lambert. He helped us find all the letterboxes we searched for. John was not afraid to trudge through the woods or put his hand into a stump or hidey-hole. We hope he will continue to help us search.
