***Both boxes alive & well 2/20/05***

Every sunday morning, there is a weekly gathering of local birdwatchers at the Eagle Creek Nature Center. The group takes a guided birdwatching hike and welcomes beginners, as well as more experienced birdwatchers.

Enter Eagle Creek Park at the 56th St., South Gate entrance. There is a $3 or $4 admission fee per vehicle. Take Eagle Creek Parkway north to Big Pine Drive. Turn right onto Big Pine Drive, crossing 62nd St. Take the first left at a sign saying "Lilly Lake Trail Parking" and pull into the first available parking space to your left. There is an unmarked trailhead directly in front of these parking spaces. This is where you begin.

Take the trail into the woods and take the first fork to the right. Follow this fork through the woods until you find a fork to the left, leading towards a paved road. Take this fork. Continue along the path, looking for a large "double" tree to your left. It looks as if a skinny, light-colored tree is growing out of the side of a thicker, dark-colored tree. From this spot, continue on the trail for 30 paces. Directly ahead, on a point, overlooking the paved road, you will see a stump. Look in the stump for a "bird's nest".

Go back to the trail and continue in the same direction, following the ridge alongside the road. When you can see Lilly Lake, start looking to your left for a large knarled tree with 2 large broken branches lying on either side of it. If you reach the paved road, you've gone too far! Go to the base of the branch lying on the eastern side of the tree. Keeping the branch between yourself and the path, take 6 steps along the branch. You should find a hollowed spot on the underside of the branch. Here you will find "Birdwatching".
